((Anna Wentworth/Arts Reviewer: Hate destroys the guilty and innocent alike.
That is the underlying message in Janice Kennedy's original play, "The Last
Hanging in Pike County" a story of the Hatfield/McCoy Fued.
The play opens with a flashback as Johnsie Hatfield--Michael Mahoney---newly
released from prison, returns to the mountains and talks about the past with an
old mountain woman, Aunt Jenny--Faith Potts.
Johnsie was in love with Roseanne McCoy--Susan Sanford--but ever since his
father may or may not have killed her uncle during the civil war, the two
families have hated each other. Call this a mountain version of "Romeo and
Juliet".
Rosanne's cousin-Nancy-played by Mikki Liner has a hankering for Johnsie
herself even though his father may have killed hers.
When Roseanne and Johnsie go to face his pap, Devil Anse--Jim E.
Brady--makes it very clear that he won't bless their marriage.
The mutual dislike between the Hatfields and McCoys escalates, culminating
in the death of the most innocent in both families. One of who is Devil Anse's
illegitimate nephew Cotton Top, played by Beckett Taylor.
"The Last Hanging in Pike County" is a fascinating story. The Lime Kiln
itself makes a beautiful and appropriate setting, but there is almost too much
stage and too much foliage for the relatively small cast.
This Lime Kiln original is well worth the trip to Lexington. The show
continues through June 29.))
