of Visitors. The board meets two weeks from now.
But the superintendent says- -flat out- -that the Institute will NOT CLOSE.
He has backed away slightly from saying he could raise enough money in just ten
phone calls to make this a PRIVATE college. There is still support for the
idea among alumni and SOME folks in Richmond.
If V-M-I does become co-ed, though, Josiah Bunting says he aims to abide by
the law with minimal changes.
He's determined not to lower the physical demands on cadets to accommodate
women, for example- -as the service academies had to do in the 70's.

Authorities have charged a Roanoke man in knife attacks on two women.
22- year- old Ronnie Lee Howard is charged with abducting a woman at
knifepoint nearly two weeks ago.
Howard also faces charges of burglary and grand larceny after forcing
himself into another woman's apartment.
Police are continuing their investigation.
Additional charges are expected.

It has been double trouble for a Hardees restaurant in Salem.
First the restaurant was shut down by the health department because of
suspected Salmonella poisioning.

And then the store re-opened for business without getting the okay from
health inspectors.
The fast food chain on route 4-19 was closed Tuesday after two of its
employees came down with Salmonella poisioning.
It re-opened yesterday morning, after a manager mistakenly got the kitchen
up and running. It has since been closed again.

In sports Bill Russell is 0-and-2 as the Los Angeles
Dodgers' interim manager. Ryne Sandberg doubled twice in the Chicago
Cubs' 6-to-4 win at Los Angeles. The Dodgers were playing just
hours after learning manager Tom Lasorda had suffered a heart
attack. Doctors say Lasorda's heart is working well following
angioplasty.
