A Roanoke woman is charged with fatally beating her newborn daughter at a homeless shelter last December.
In a statement to police, 28-year-old Veronica Janine Via said she was worried that she could not raise her 14-day-old daughter alone, so she decided to send her to -- quote -- "a better place."
Via was indicted yesterday on a charge of murdering Jasmine Monique Via at the Transitional Living Center for homeless people.
An official at the center said Via no longer lives there.

An Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms spokesman says the lucky part came when a hunter just happened on a group of armed men in a remote forest near Phoenix.

The six-month probe ended yesterday with the arrest of 12 members of the group suspected of plotting to bomb government offices in Phoenix.

That's how some residents would describe the Kim Stan Landfill.
Mounds of trash brought in by the steady flow of trucks produced 36-thousand gallons of leachate that flows into the Jackson River even to this day.
These citizens have fought hard over the years to rid their community of industrial irresponsibility. TODAY'S STUFF ( Meeting in room)
The fight is still on going.
But after the help of a retired NASA scientist this grassroots organization finally has some hope.
They are planning to do construct a organic vegetation filter system to absorb the leachate.
But it takes money.
And the state has finally stepped in.
Governor Allen presented the County with a check for more than 134-thousands to begin the project.

The automotive products company received 300- thousand dollars from the Governor's Opportunity fund.

He presented Meadville Forging a check for 175-thousand dollars... and helped break ground on its new facility.
Company officials expect production to start next summer.
They will ALSO hire more than 100 workers.

A small boy made some firefighters' lives a little brighter last night.

Six- year- old Zachary Snell was seriously injured in a car accident in Lynchburg May 17th.
Internal injuries sent Zachary to a Charlottesville hospital for more than a week, and only last Friday did his doctor pronounce him 100 percent again.
Zachary's first order of business was to come to Fire Station 8 and thank the firefighters who helped him when he was hurt.
