One teenager, Linel K. Miller, a Virgin Islands resident, is dead and more
than a dozen others injured after their van ran off a road in Amherst County
Steve Smallshaw reports the teens were on a holiday outing from their summer
job program when the accident occurred.

stretch of Route 635 near Pedlar Mills in Amherst County.
Two vanloads of teenagers from the nearby Job Corps center were headed south
around four p-m, when one of the vans ran off the road.

Police say the van driver, a counselor at the Job Corps center, was unable
to tell them what happened.

The accident scene was chaotic.
Injured teenagers were strewn about on stretchers as emergency personnel
from five different rescue squads treated their injuries.
Some were more serious...others suffered scrapes and bruises and were able
to walk away from the crash.
It took more than an hour to get all the victims loaded onto stretchers and
sent on to Lynchburg General Hospital.

State police are still investigating the cause of the crash.

A fight at a Roanoke motel led to a fatal shooting there today.
22- year- old Jesse Darnell Ferguson was shot and killed outside of the
Embassy Inn on Melrose Avenue.
Police have charged 22- year- old Cepada Renaldo Wiley with murder.
Witnesses told police the victim was fighting with Wiley's brother when
Wiley arrived at the motel and fired the fatal shots.
Wiley waited for police and turned himself in. He's being held in the
Roanoke City Jail without bond.
In Los Angeles, a demonstration and counter- demonstration became violent as
marchers on both sides of the immigration issue began hitting each other with
fists, soda cans and picket signs.
Police in riot gear had to control the people demonstrating both for and
against Proposition 187.
The measure would keep illegal immigrants from receiving public education,
non-emergency health care and social services.

Most of the country celebrated the Fourth of July peacefully.
In New York City, the annual Macy's fireworks display wowed the crowds.
In our nation's capital marching bands and flag-waving spectators stretched
the length of Constitution Avenue for the National Independence Day Parade.
And in Bristol Rhode Island, the oldest continuous Fourth of July parade
ushered in its 211th year in spite of the threat of rain.
Roanokers showed their stripes tonight as they celebrated the fourth in

In Scottown Ohio, it's a somber Fourth of July.
They're mourning the dead and cleaning up after a blaze inside a fireworks
store yesterday that killed EIGHT people and injured 12 others.
Emergency personnel have spent the day searching for any other possible

A Hardee's restaurant in Salem may have to pay up after a woman found an
insect in her food.
The incident happened in May.
Patricia Artz (ARTS) said she was eating a breakfast biscuit and bit into a
She said she told a worker at the restaurant about the incident and wasn't
satisfied with his response.
She's suing for 25 thousand dollars. This is the same Hardee's that was
closed last week by health officials after an employee tested positive for
The pressure to fit in at school can be overwhelming for some youngsters.
In Danville authorities hope a new dress code will be one way to help ease
student rivalry at one school.

Lawyers for the Princess of Wales are mulling over a divorce offer from Prince
Charles' legal team offered the divorce settlement package and is awaiting
response from Diana.
The package is believed to include up to 30 million dollars, a custody
proposal and details on her future role as princess.
