They say flames were shooting from the roof and decided to attack the blaze from the outside.
Roanoke County is served by volunteer fire fighters on nights and weekends.
They say they're doing the best they can and that situations such as this are unusual.

A man is dead after a one vehicle accident in Rockbridge County this afternoon.
State Police say Manning Outlen, Junior of New York was the passenger in a Chevy Lumina that was traveling south on Interstate 81 near Fairfield.
His vehicle ran off the left side of the road, hit an embankment, and overturned shortly before five.
Outlen was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene.

While the other Drivers pitted on lap 102 because of threatening rain, Sterling Marlin stayed on the track and won the rain shortened Pepsi 400.

After a two hour delay, Marlin got the jump on the start and he was the leader early in the Pepsi 400.
A little later in the race Ken Schrader moved up beside Marlin and the two rould race side by side for a couple of laps.
A car lost a spring that landed on the track bringing out the first caution.
Jeff Gordon took the lead on the restart bue he would drop back to the 24-th spot because of handling problems.
Marlin had ignition problems but once he got it corrected he worked his way through the field and was back in the front with 74 laps to go.
The caution would fly again. This time Robert Pressley and Dick Trickle get lose in turn one Trickle spins out collecting a couple of other cars in the crash.
Then the rains came again bringing out the caution. After a couple of laps under caution the race was red flagged and all the cars were directed to pit road.
Marlin was the leader when the race was stopped with 118 laps in the book and with the threat of more rain in the area the race was called and Marlin declared the winner.

The conditions could not have been any better for early July as humidity levels were at least bearable.
Roanoke College sophomore David Angell moved to the front by the one mile mark and had a comfortable lead as the runners emerged from the woods.
Angell, who dominated distance events in the Roanoke Valley district while at Franklin County beat Northside's Tommy McGuire with a time of 17 minutes and 6 seconds. ((DAVID ANGELL/MEN'S 5K WINNER:))
The women's 5k run was a race of age diversity with participants ranging from nine to nearly 80.

This baby black rhino was saved from certain death by her foster mother, Karen Trendler.
When little "Zyant" was five days old she was dying from hunger and was rescued.
Her birth mother was not able to take care of her because she was sick.
Zyant is now two months old.
When she turns 18 months old, the little Rhino will be let back into the wild.
Zyant needs milk every four hours and needs to be taken on a walk-- or run-- (----------------) twice a day.
