Firefighters and neighbors shared a feeling of helplessness in the wake of a fire that killed a Lynchburg couple and their three young daughters.
The blaze at 10-11 Sheffield Drive had too much of a head start.. Osama Abouzeid and his wife were found huddled in their childrens' bedroom, the exits at the front of their home blocked by thick smoke and fire.
Their friends and neighbors spent the day consoling each other, wondering how children who were playing in the yard just yesterday could be gone today.

22- year- old Cepada Renaldo Wiley was arraigned this morning in General District Court.
He is charged with the murder of 22- year- old Jerry Darnell Ferguson, the Roanoke man who was shot and killed outside of a Melrose Avenue motel on Thursday.
Today, a judge set bond at 17- thousand 500 dollars, citing Wiley's cooperation with police, his ties to the community, and his lack of a criminal record.

A Rockbridge County man accused of killing his former girlfriend's boyfriend could get life in prison.

Today 26-year old Ronald C. Hewitt pled guilty to first- degree murder in the shooting death of 24- year- old Christopher Higgins.
During the shooting Higgins' girlfriend, Brenda Tomlin, was severely wounded.
The victim's family says Hewitt forced his way into their home on Christmas Eve armed with a rifle.
As Higgins and Tomlin were in bed Hewitt allegedly walked down the hallway and shot them both.
Hewitt will be sentenced in October.

The trial of Stewartsville Pharmacist Joseph Chopski got underway in federal court in Roanoke today. His lawyer suggested that the fraud charges are part of a running dispute between Chopski and Trigon.

The insurance company has investigated Chopski before. Blue Cross/Blue Shield thought he was dispensing too many BRAND NAME drugs over generics. The company eventually decided he wasn't.
When Blue Cross initiated its "R-X Alternative program," Chopski posted a sign at his "Wonder Drug" pharmacy that said: "we accept Blue Cross/Blue Shield, but it sucks."
Chopski's lawyer says the program cut his profit by 11-percent.

When first confronted with evidence of fraudulent billing, Chopski allegedly told the auditor that he could "get a good lawyer and ...make it look like accidental billing."
Attorney Tony Anderson told the jury today that Chopski "can't explain away every mistake," but Anderson also points out that there are 19-hundred dollars worth of discrepancies out of more than 600-THOUSAND dollars worth of billings over a two- and- a- half year period.
The trial is expected to last three weeks.

Both the greater Roanoke and Lynchburg areas continue to have some of the lowest unemployment figures in the state.
The Virginia Employment Commission just released the numbers for May this afternoon.
The Roanoke area has a jobless rate of roughly two- and- a- half- percent.
The Lynchburg region comes in around three- and- a- half- percent.
The figures in both communities are down from where they were a year ago.
Statewide unemployment in May decreased to a little over four- percent.
That's the lowest number in the month of May in six years.

The Cavalier righthander picks up NCAA's Earned Run Average title after finishing his junior season with an ERA of 1.76.
