Authorities say alcohol was to blame for a man hit by a train in Campbell County early this morning.

It happened around 3:15 where the railroad tracks cross Route 6-80 near Rustburg.
22-year old Lewis Noel Junior of Madison Heights was lying on the tracks when he was struck by a northbound Norfolk Southern freight train.
The train's wheels severed Noel's feet from his legs, and doctors were unable to reattach them later at Lynchburg General Hospital.
He remains in serious condition there tonight.
Police say Noel had been drinking prior to the accident.

An examiner considering a local convenience store's beer license today heard the story of a 17-year old convicted drunk driver.

We are not naming the young man who's drinking led to the death of a teacher last December.
Today he estimated that he'd been in the Riverside Quickette store buying beer 15 to 25 times BEFORE the fatal crash.
The incident prompted County Police to conduct an undercover investigation at the store two weeks later.
Two people- -each TWENTY years old- -were sent in to buy beer.

He anchored the "N-B-C Nightly News" from 1970 to 1982.
John Chancellor was three days shy of his 69th birthday.
