Investigators, pressing hard to find the cause of the T-W-A flight 800
disaster, are focusing this morning on a fraction of a second of sound from
the 7-47's cockpit voice recorder.
It's the strongest evidence so far of an on-board explosion.
But Investigators say they need to know more before blaming the crash on
terrorism.

Hopes that the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder from TWA
flight 800--would provide immediate clues to what happened over the atlantic
ocean were dimmed Thursday.
The tape raised more questions than providing answers.

ABRUPTLY--ALL FOUR CVR CHANNELS RECORDED A BRIEF FRACTION OF A SECOND OF SOUND
JUST PRIOR TO THE END OF THE TAPE.
That sound has not yet been identified. investigators are still looking at
three possible causes for the TWA disaster..catastrophic
mechanical..failure..a bomb or a missle....
The sound heard on the tape will be compared to those from pan am flight
103--which was blown up over lockerbie Scotland in 1988.

about lining up witnesses, and falsified documents.
His law license was suspended for four years.
Neaton unsuccessfully defended the German-born U-V-A honor student as an
accomplice in the murder of Derek and Nancy Haysom in the mid-80's.

Olympic track and field competition begins today in Atlanta, with
qualification heats for the men's and women's 100 meters.
In competition yesterday American Brooke Bennet won a gold in the women's
800 freesyle.
Janet Evans finished sixth in that race, her final Olympic event.
And the Americans failed to come close to medaling in the all-around
gymnastics competition.
The top spots went to Ukraine, Russia and Romania.
And the U-S women hoopsters put together their biggest blowout in Olympic
history, battering Zaire 107-to-47.

Officials at the Radford arsenal say they don't need to be on the Superfund
list to clean up hazardous waste at the plant.
Last week, Governor Allen intervened to keep the E-P-A from including the
arsenal on its national priority list.

At a preliminary hearing yesterday, a police detective testified
that Wiley gave a statement to authorities.
