A 16 year-old boy from Wytheville faces up to 42 years in prison for
murdering a sheriff's deputy.

Christopher Shawn Wheeler pled no contest today to second degree murder and
using a firearm to commit a felony.
Wheeler killed Wythe County Sheriff's Deputy Clifford Dicker when Dicker
tried to arrest him in December of 1994.
Wheeler has been held in a juvenile detention center since the shooting.
After accepting his plea today, the judge ordered Wheeler to JAIL to await
his sentencing in October.

what WAS TWA flight 800: helmeted divers working in a dark, murky field of
debris 120 feet below the surface of the Atlantic.
The jumble of wreckage is NOT identifiable as an airplane....and a daunting
challenge to divers in search of victims and debris.

A Navy search vessel, equipped with a laser line scanner, joined divers today
at an unexplored field of wreckage....that investigators hope will finally
yield evidence to confirm their leading theory: that a bomb brought down the
jetliner.
Divers specifically are looking for luggage and parts from the front of the
plane at a search site CLOSER to Kennedy Airport.... than those locations
where the tail, sections of the cabin, and the cockpit were found.
A heavy concentration of debris in the new area, would suggest a bomb in the
cargo bay. But top Navy officials denied published reports that a large
collection of luggage has been discovered.

But salvage ships over the past three days have been bringing in large
sections of wreckage like this part of the top of the 747's passenger

One local tennis note. 16 year old Roanoke native KJ Hippensteel beat 3rd
seeded Andrew Park of San Marino California 6-7, 6-4 and 6-3 in the 4th round
of the National Hardcourt Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

The first round of the women's city county golf championship produced a
predictable leader yesterday Dot Bolling grabbed the lead after the first
eighteen.

Playing on her home course at Hidden Valley, the recent State Amateur
runner-up went out and shot a 74 to take a four shot lead over Nancy Shuck.
Bolling's playing partners also had their moments yesterday as Blue Hills
brenda Harvey drains the long putt to save par on 15. Brenda shot an 83.
Kathy Hull, the third member of the group also shot an 83 on a very hot and
muggy day.
But the folks at Hidden Valley didn't install this fan just to keep the
ladies cool.
The 13th green is located in a part of the course that get a lot of air flow,
and the fan helps stir the air and prevent disease from settling in on the
putting service.

events for All America City Week.
Beginning next Wednesday, open house will take place at the Hotel Roanoke
and Conference Center, the Jefferson Center and the Trash Transfer Station.
