Police were here last night, too, investigating the two men they charged
with chasing a group of kids around with CHAINSAWS.
Hicks says his stepsons were the ones who were being chased.
He believes the explosive is related to last night's chainsaw incident.
Police say there is NO evidence the two events are connected.
The men charged with using the chainsaws are 43- year- old Danny Lee Ruff of
Roanoke, and his brother, 39- year- old Daniel L. Ruff.

A fouled-up computer system is finally on its way to localities.
It's supposed to automate welfare reform and help make up for a shortfall in
social service case workers.
A state task force said today: the localities won't get full use of the
system for two to three more years.

One of the Star City's most recognizable political figures has died.
Howard Musser served on Roanoke City Council for 12 years... and was vice-
mayor for 3 consecutive terms.
Musser died from complications after surgery yesterday.
He had suffered from colon cancer.

colleague...he was also a friend.

Trooper Dan Jessee suffered multiple injuries in an accident three and a

He was investigating an accident on the Interstate in Salem when a flatbed

He suffered several broken ribs and a punctured lung.
The driver of the rig was NOT charged, but a Roanoke jury this week found

Central Virginia residents suffering from neurological disorders can now
receive an initial diagnosis right in their own backyard.
The Westminster- Canterbury retirement home has teamed up with the
University of Virginia to offer a neuro- psychiatric evaluation center.
Patients undergo tests to measure things such as memory, problem- solving
and motor skills.
It's the first center of its kind in the area.

Former Boston Red Sox manager Butch Hobson was in a Rhode Island court this
The 44 year old Hobson pleaded innocent to cocaine possession charges this
morning. He was released on 2-thousand dollars bond.
Hobson was fired yesterday as manager of Scranton Wilkes-Barre, the
Philadelphia Phillies top minor league club.
He was arrested may fourth in a hotel after federal agents found 120
dollars worth of cocaine in his shaving kit.
In a signed statement, Hobson acknowledged using cocaine and also admitted
sending a friend in Alabama money for the drug. If convicted he faces up to
three years in jail.
High school basketball coach Morgan Wooten is out of the hospital.
Wooten, the winningest high school coach of all time, returned home after
undergoing a liver transplant last month. Doctors say he will make a full
recovery and will be able to coach again.
Los Angeles Clippers coach bill Fitch is in stable condition following
triple bypass surgery late last night in Texas.
The 62 year old fitch has coached the Clippers the last two seasons. Team
officials say his recovery time is four to six weeks.
And one of the N-F-L's top kickers is calling it quits.
Minnesota's Faud Reveiz has announced his retirement. He set an N-F-L
record of 31 consecutive field goals over the past two seasons.
