Heavy rains prompt a flash flood watch that will last until tomorrow
morning, and the Roanoke River is expected to bankfull. All the soggy details

Mother Nature smiled on us this weekend-- but the weather's turned gray
and wet for the start of the work week.

A woman from Collinsville is getting some much needed R-and-R, a few days
after rescuing some of her neighbors.
Last Thursday 81-year old Gracie Sigmon helped evacuate nearby residents who
were not aware their apartment building was on fire.

One resident was sleeping so hard that the soft-spoken Sigmon had to scream
outside until he finally woke up.
The blaze apparently started from a faulty electrical lamp chord.
There were no injuries reported and there's no word yet on the cost of the
Sigmon's efforts were even more remarkable considering that she walks with
the help of a cane after having hip surgery a few years ago.
Before the fire, she was rarely known to venture beyond her front porch.
Virginia prison officials are patting themselves on the back for safely
stopping their most dangerous prison uprising in a dozen years.
As Ellen Qualls reports Nottoway Correctional Center, east of Farmville, is
now under indefinite lockdown.

The Allen administration says this only reinforces the need for the new

A state police investigation has ended with the resignation of a South
Boston police officer.
Sergeant Dale McKinney resigned this evening after an allegation of sexual
The complaint was raised a couple of months ago by an employee at a local
The woman reportedly told investigators McKinney harassed her while at work.
Police Chief Jim Hall requested the investigation.
Commonwealth's Attorney John Greenbacker does NOT anticipate any criminal
charges being filed.
He says McKinney's resignation is consistent with the wishes of those close
to the case.

If you're curious as to who was named THE healthiest city in America... it
was Rochester, Minnesota.
An agreement that would allow law officers in central Virginia to make
arrests in a neighboring locality is OFF the table tonight.
Instead, police and county officials are working to change the state law
that limits jurisdictional authority.

duty police officer who witnesses a crime OUTSIDE their jurisdiction does NOT
have the legal authority to make an arrest.

judge James Updike threw out a drunk driving case, after ruling the Bedford
City police officer had followed the suspect too far into Bedford County before
making the arrest. Area police are now determined not to let that happen

But state code only allows police departments, not sheriff's departments to
enter into mutual aid agreements.
Area legislators say they'll work to correct that technicality in the next
General Assembly session.
