Federal investigators are now trying to determine what caused a small plane to crash in Roanoke County yesterday.
The single engine Beechcraft went down on Catawba Mountain killing the pilot, Praveen (Busk-AIR-in) Bhaskaran of Vinton.

Praveen Bhaskaran was an experienced pilot. He was carrying bank documents on a regular flight between Charlotte and Roanoke.
The single engine Beech Bonanza went down in the steep terrain near McAfee's Knob.
Witnesses said the plane crashed in heavy rain and fog, but investigators aren't offering an early conclusions on the cause.

Monday's heavy rains tore away the structure of a Rocky Mount apartment building.

Rainwater washed away soil at the cinderblock foundation.
Police secured the building.
Right now, no one's allowed inside.
The Red Cross found shelter for residents, who were evacuated.

The owner says he doesn't know yet what will happen to the apartment house-- but hopes his tenants can get their belongings sometime this week.

Armed gunmen held up an Air France plane shortly after it landed yesterday in southern France.

The four masked thieves rammed a van through a fence and drove up to the jet as it taxied to the terminal.
After firing shots towards the cockpit they ordered the pilot to open a forward hold from which they removed a safe containing a large amount of money.
The robbers then sped away.
None of the 172 passengers was injured and the thieves remain at large.

A small private jet crashed onto a busy highway- slamming into a van and then breaking in two.
The three people aboard the plane suffered only minor injuries.
But rescue crews had to cut the driver of the van out of his vehicle.

A Pittsylvania County man has given his young daughter the gift of life.

Two months ago, Ring-gold Fire Chief Mike Neal donated a kidney to his 11- year old daughter.
When Stephanie was two, she was diagnosed with an underdeveloped bladder.
Four years later, the Neals were told Stephanie would eventually need a kidney transplant.
Both parents volunteered, but Mike Neal was selected by doctors as the best candidate.
Since the surgery, Stephanie has gained nearly 20- pounds and can eat and drink almost anything she wants.

The attacks were purposely left up to everyone except the perceived party pit bull.. a newt gingrich video meant to soften his image... and an entire production meant to soften the party's image..
But the night was also meant to combat the gender gap... so 38-year old new york representative and new mother susan molinari delivered the keynote speech, as the candidate watched from his hotel room, and his wife and running mate jack kemp watched from the convention floor. And the debate continues to swirl around the old nursing home property on Hollins Mill Road.
The city sold the building to Elderberry Incorporated with the promise it would be torn down.
Now Elderberry wants to sell it to the Jordan Baptist Church, which has no intention of demolishing it.
For now, city officials are holding up those plans.
