((Arguing the campaign's fundamental issue is not policy, but trust and values, Bob Dole, accepting his party's nomination, first tackled his greatest deficit: age.
BOB DOLE, R-PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE: AGE HAS ITS ADVANTAGES. TO THOSE WHO SAY IT WAS NEVER SO, THAT AMERICA HAS NOT BEEN BETTER, I SAY YOU'RE WRONG AND I KNOW BECAUSE I WAS THERE. I HAVE SEEN IT. I REMEMBER.
Then, saying voters were gravely insulted in 92, Dole lashed out at Bill and Hillary Clinton, playing off the title of the first lady's recent book.
DOLE: WE ARE TOLD IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD. I AM HERE TO TELL YOU IT DOES NOT TAKE A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD. IT TAKES A FAMILY.
IT IS NOT AS WAS SAID BY THE VICTORS FOUR YEARS AGO THE ECONOMY, STUPID. IT'S THE KIND OF NATION WE ARE. ALL THINGS FLOW FROM DOING WHAT IS RIGHT.
He then turned to his agenda, a combination of a 15-percent tax cut and a balanced budget.
DOLE: IT IS DEMEANING TO THE NATION THAT WITHIN THE CLINTON ADMINISTRATION CORPS OF ELITE WHO NEVER GREW UP, NEVER SACRIFICED, SHOULD HAVE POWER TO FUND WITH YOUR EARNINGS THEIR DUBIOUS SELF SACRIFICING SCHEMES.
Saying his sometimes combative, compromising nature is honorable, Dole's life story was presented in a pre-taped introduction simply titled "Bob".
I'M NOT LOOKING FOR THE GLORY OF OFFICE. I'M NOT TRYING TO FILL OUT A RESUME. I WANT TO BE A BRIDGE FROM MY GENERATION TO YOUNGER GENERATIONS.
Vice presidential nominee Jack Kemp talked of the GOP responsibility-- convincing voters it is the party of change.
JACK KEMP, R-VICE PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE: OUR GOAL IS NOT JUST TO WIN BUT TO BE WORTHY OF WINNING.
But the man of the night was to have the final word.
DOLE: I STAND BEFORE YOU, TESTED BY ADVERSITY, A FIGHTER BY PRINCIPLE, AND THE MOST OPTIMISTIC MAN IN AMERICA. WITH MY FEET ON THE GROUND AND MY HEART FILLED WITH HOPE, I PUT FAITH IN YOU. I AM CONVINCED AMERICA'S BEST DAYS ARE YET TO COME. APPLAUSE OUT.))
