The republican presidential nomination is something dole has always wanted--denied the lead party role in 1980, and 88, at 73 years old he has finally achieved it.
The traditional roll call of the states went from alabama to wyoming then back to kansas so dole's home state could put him over the top. the announcement culminated with a celebration from his hometown of russell.
NAT TRAIL OFF--
Dole watched the event from his hotel room.
Earlier, in talk show fashion, his second wife elizabeth strolled the convention floor recounting her husband's life long struggles and commitments.
ELIZABETH DOLE:"HE'S DEDICATED HIS LIFE TO MAKING A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE, BECAUSE OF HIS LIFE EXPERIENCE.
In the end dole received 1,928 delegate votes, the remaining 62 were divided up between pat buchanan and the other former candidates.
Tonight Dole gives what could be considered the most important speech of his political life.--one which may offer dole the best chance at convincing undecided voters to follow him. he reportedly will not mention the abortion issue.
