An incident in which three people were briefly taken hostage had the Bedford County Sheriff's Department busy until very early this morning.

Bedford County deputies then blocked part of route 8-0-5.
They were concerned about the potentially explosive situation Hickman may have created, and the fact that they believed he was armed.
By one- this morning though, they secured the home, discovered no gas leak, and learned that Hickman was no longer there.

The Sheriff's Department is still checking for Hickman at several locations.
Lieutenant Kent Robey characterized Hickman as a drifter who has several warrants out for his arrest.
Robey also believes Hickman had been drinking.
No one was hurt in the incident.

Meantime, military officials are investigating the crash this weekend of a support c-130 cargo plane.. that was carrying gear for the President to New York.
All nine people aboard died when the plane went down in a remote area of Wyoming shortly after take-off.

Friends remembered Praveen Bhaskaran(bus-kair-in)-- They knew him as Talex.
Tuesday the plane he was flying crashed near MacAfee's Knob.
But the crash was not the topic of this memorial service.
The hundreds in attendance were there to remember how he lived. ((TOM GLASGOW: HE WAS A SHARING PERSON, A GIVING PERSON BECAUSE OF THE LIFE HE LIVED AND THE EXAMPLE HE SET. HE GAVE A LOT OF PEOPLE HOPE. JODY LYONS: THE REASON HE WAS FLYING THAT PLANE WAS TO EARN HIS GREENCARD. TALEX AT 28 YEARS OLD WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL.))
Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the crash, but they have ruled out engine failure.
That night the Vinton man aborted one landing attempt at Roanoke Regional Airport because of fog.
Investigators say he crashed when he was circling for a second attempt.
Talex was relying on his flight plan and radar information from the Washington Air Traffic Control Center. Stand up second one DENISE ALLEN/NEWS 7 REPORTER: A RETIRED AIRTRAFFIC CONTROLLER SAYS THE CRASH MAY HAVE BEEN AVOIDED HAD CONTROLLERS BEEN ON DUTY.
THE AIRPORT'S 24 HOUR TOWER DUTY WAS CUT IN 1981.
AIRPORT OFFICIALS SAY THE F-A-A DETERMINES WHETHER AN AIRPORT NEEDS OVERNIGHT CONTROLLERS BY THE NUMBER OF FLIGHTS THAT COME IN BETWEEN MIDNIGHT AND SIX A-M.
MARK COURTNEY ALSO SAYS HE BELIEVES EVERYONE AT THE ROANOKE REGIONAL AIRPORT WOULD LIKE TO HAVE 24 HOUR SERVICE, BUT IT'S NOT A DECISION MADE AT THE LOCAL LEVEL. STAND UP ENDS
There has been no evidence that the lack of air traffic controllers lead to the deadly plane crash.
And for the hundreds gathered at Valley Word Ministries, they choose to remember Talex Bhaskaran as he lived--full of enthusiasm and faith.

Firefighters are trying to bring Oregon wildfires under control before hot, dry weather returns to the state.

The man who lived in the trailer, John Goode, was not in his home at the time of the fire.
No firefighters were hurt battling the blaze.
In spite of all the damage it caused, the city of Bedford's volunteer fire department had it under control in less than 10 minutes.

Roanoke Police say Hall pulled back into the right lane when he saw a third car headed his way in the eastbound lane.
He sideswiped Muse's car, and then hit the third car head- on.
Traffic on Brandon Avenue was blocked in both directions for well over an hour as emergency crews tried to save the man.
No one else in the accident appeared to have suffered any life threatening injuries.
Roanoke Police have not completed their investigation into what caused the wreck.

Mountain in Roanoke County.
Those attending the service say they will remember Bhaskaran (Bus-kair-in) for his enthusiasm and faith.

Divers have recovered the bodies of two more victims of T-W-A flight 800.
Twenty two bodies of the 230 aboard the plane are still missing.

A three-year old boy who fell into a zoo exhibit and was rescued by a female gorilla is now in fair condition.

The boy fell 20 feet into the gorilla pit at an Illinois zoo on Friday.
The gorilla grabbed the boy and cradled him just like a mother, until help arrived.
The gorilla was taken from the exhibit after the incident but was back home for zoo visitors to see yesterday. The home video was shot by a zoo visitor.

The state payroll is both up and down according to the latest reports from Richmond.
Governor Allen's administration has cut about five-thousand salaried employees since taking office.
Remaining state employees are costing three-point-three percent more in salaries. That's still considered a low growth rate.
Secretary of Administration Michael Thomas said the growth is inflated because it includes one-time buyout payments to workers who left or retired early.

The U-S Justice Department is monitoring the Virginia Military Institute closely when it comes to information about integrating women.
V-M-I needs the department's approval to talk to some other military colleges.

V-M-I is not the only all-male school in the state that is looking at admitting women.
The Board of Trustees at Hampden-Sydney College is considering the same issue this week.
Unlike V-M-I, Hampden-Sydney is already a private school -- not public, like V-M-I.
Hampden-Sydney has been working for some time on a coeducation plan. The board plans to announce its decision tomorrow.
