They were concerned about the potentially explosive situation Hickman may have created, and the fact that they believed he was armed.
By one- this morning though, they secured the home, discovered no gas leak, and learned that Hickman was no longer there.

Lieutenant Kent Robey characterized Hickman as a drifter who has several warrants out for his arrest.

Friends remembered Praveen Bhaskaran(bus-kair-in)-- They knew him as Talex.
Tuesday the plane he was flying crashed near MacAfee's Knob.
But the crash was not the topic of this memorial service.
The hundreds in attendance were there to remember how he lived. ((TOM GLASGOW: HE WAS A SHARING PERSON, A GIVING PERSON BECAUSE OF THE LIFE HE LIVED AND THE EXAMPLE HE SET. Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the crash, but they have ruled out engine failure.
That night the Vinton man aborted one landing attempt at Roanoke Regional Airport because of fog.
Investigators say he crashed when he was circling for a second attempt.

Roanoke Police say Hall pulled back into the right lane when he saw a third car headed his way in the eastbound lane.
He sideswiped Muse's car, and then hit the third car head- on.
Traffic on Brandon Avenue was blocked in both directions for well over an hour as emergency crews tried to save the man.
No one else in the accident appeared to have suffered any life threatening injuries.
Roanoke Police have not completed their investigation into what caused the wreck.

A three-year old boy who fell into a zoo exhibit and was rescued by a female gorilla is now in fair condition.

The boy fell 20 feet into the gorilla pit at an Illinois zoo on Friday.
The gorilla grabbed the boy and cradled him just like a mother, until help arrived.
The gorilla was taken from the exhibit after the incident but was back home for zoo visitors to see yesterday. The home video was shot by a zoo visitor.

The state payroll is both up and down according to the latest reports from Richmond.
Governor Allen's administration has cut about five-thousand salaried employees since taking office.
Remaining state employees are costing three-point-three percent more in salaries. That's still considered a low growth rate.
Secretary of Administration Michael Thomas said the growth is inflated because it includes one-time buyout payments to workers who left or retired early.

The Board of Trustees at Hampden-Sydney College is considering the same issue this week.
Unlike V-M-I, Hampden-Sydney is already a private school -- not public, like V-M-I.
