A Pittsylvania County judge has appointed an outside prosecutor to look into
a possible conflict of interest relating to economic development.
Teresa Hamilton is in our newsroom with the latest.
Keith, the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors approached
Commonwealth's Attorney David Grimes, in June, about a possible investigation.
But Grimes, who's been working in Pittsylvania County for a number of
years, felt it best to seek an outside prosecutor.

A court order has turned the case over to Roanoke City Commonwealth's
Attorney Donald Caldwell and his assistant Betty Jo Anthony.

A violation of the conflict of interest statue is considered a misdemeanor--
if the accused knowingly violates the law.

A three- car collision in Pulaski County killed one person and injured three
others this afternoon.
It happened on route 11 between Fairlawn and Dublin around 3:15.
Two cars hit head- on, and a third vehicle crashed into the wreckage.
Rescue personnel say a father driving with his two young children was

A woman driving another vehicle was also seriously hurt.
Police have not released the names of the victims.
Just two months after surviving a strong challenge from within his own
party, Republican Senator John Warner is questioning the party's presidential
nominee on a key issue.

The final results of a year- long investigation into the agency's finances
trickled into prosecutor Ed Meeks' office earlier this month.

Tech officials and leasing agents are baffled over what has caused the
housing shortage, and expect to work together to find solutions.

The students we spoke to are upperclassmen, staying with friends until they
find their own places. The larger concern is for international students, some
of whom are arriving in the U.S. and Blacksburg for the first time.

Enrollment at Ferrum College has not lived up to the school's expectations.
But things may change soon with the addition of a new vice president.
Scott Prince explains.

Enrollment at Ferrum peaked in 1982 with more than 16- hundred students.
But in the 1990's there's been a steady decline in the student population.
In fact during the last school year, enrollment bottomed out with 1-
thousand ninety- three students.
But it seems Miller has a reputation for strengthening college admissions.
((Before coming to Ferrum, Miller worked for Alvernia College in Reading,
During his 8 years there, freshman enrollment went up by 21- percent.
And overall enrollment saw a 47- percent increase.))

Miller believes it's not enough to recruit students.
He feels he needs to recruit graduates.
Miller says if he does that... he'll get high marks... and at the same time
make Ferrum stronger in years to come.

A weak bond market pulled the stock market DOWN some today.
The DOW lost more than 31 points.
While NASDAQ broke a three day losing streak, gaining two points.
A judge has refused to let Sharon Bottoms visit her five year old son in the
presence of her lesbian lover.
However Judge Buford Parsons did expand Bottom's visitation rights today.
Her son Tyler will be allowed to visit his mother on weekends and holidays
at her apartment.
But the judge says Tyler will not be allowed contact with his mother's
partner April Wade.
Bottoms says she is saddened by the order.
Wade says she is angry.
Last week Bottoms dropped her three year battle to win custody of her son.
Two weeks of surveillance paid off for the Nelson County sheriff's
department this week.
Tuesday morning, deputies arrested a Nellysford man and charged him with
manufacturing marijuana with the intent to distribute.
Authorities say they caught 26- year- old William Wayne Seale tending a
large marijuana patch near his home.
More than 200- thousand dollars worth of pot plants were seized.
Seale is being held on a ten- thousand dollar bond.

The Chicago Cubs got some bad news before today's game with the Marlins, when
they found out slugger Sammy Sosa will miss the next four to six weeks with a
broken bone in his right hand.

The injury occurred yesterday afternoon when Sosa was hit on the hand with a
Mark Hutton fastball in the first inning of the Cubs game with Florida.
Sosa not only leads the national league 40 homers and 100 rbis, he's also

The Angels seemed to rally around the news this afternoon, as Chili Davis
beat the Yankees singlehandedly.

VMI returns to the gridiron this year confident the corp can improve on last

((He's a 1st team all-american and the Southern Conference offensive
player of the year. Despite his recent success, VMI tailback Thomas Haskins has
spent most of his career overcoming adversity. Coming to VMI as a 145 pound
freshman was his physical obstacle.

Haskins now weighs about 180 pounds, 8 more than last season. He bench
presses 340 and squats 500!!
With last years entire receiving core gone, there will be even more pressure

This afternoon, CBS sports announced that it has reached a multi-year
agreement to broadcast the newly created "Texas 500" at the soon to be finished
Texas Motor Speedway.
The first race will be broadcast on April 6th of next year.
The new track will seat more than 150 thousand people.
And finally, Dennis Rodman made good on his promise to show up in New York
City today dressed for a wedding.
