Favorable weather in northern California is helping firefighters get a jump
on a 70-thousand acre fire threatening 400 structures around the resort area of
Clear Lake.

with an oncoming car.

The accident happened on Route 863, near Danville.
39-year old Michael Shelton died. State Police say Shelton was travelling
West when he apparently ran off the road, lost control of his Dodge Colt and
crossed the center line.
Authorities believe the driver of the other car, 33 year old Teresa McGuire
of Danville had little time to react because there were few skid marks.
McGuire was taken to Danville Regional Medical Center-- where she is listed
in critical condition following surgery.
State Police say there was NO evidence of alcohol or excessive speed.

Congress raised the rates on inheritance taxes AFTER Fralin died in 1993,

The Fralin estate has already paid the tax bill, but the I-R-S rejected a
claim for a refund of 754-thousand dollars.
Haywood Fralin filed suit in federal court last week.
By the way, Horace Fralin's estate gave Virginia Tech more than ONE Million

Hampden-Sydney College will not follow the trend being set by the Citadel
and possibly V-M-I by going co-ed.

Yesterday Hampden Sydney's Board of Trustees stopped co-education dead in
its tracks.
Their confidential vote was not unanimous, but the school will remain
all-male.
The faculty had previously voted to go co-ed, citing declining enrollments,
the the board has the final say.

Hundreds of whales were stranded on the beach at Dusborough, near the
southwest tip of Australia.

Volunteers and officials worked throughout the night and into the morning to
rescue them.
Many of the pilot whales were eased back into the water, but some had
already died by morning.
The beaching of whales is a common phenomenon in the South-West of Western
Australia.
