Four women are making history today.
This is the Citadel's FIRST FRESHMAN class since the all male school ended
its three year battle to keep women out.

Today these women arrived on campus for orientation and were bombarded by

In Lexington, Virginia Military Institute officials haven't made a decision
on whether the school should admit women.
But female students at V-Will know what media attention is all about.

Now the media attention has shifted to South Carolina.
The Citadel has ended its three year legal battle to keep women out after
the U-S Supreme Court ruled in June that the all-male policy at V-M-I was
Four women are in this year's freshmen class at the Citadel.
Mary Baldwin officials say the newness attracts all the attention, but given
time everyone will adjust.

These V-Will students will spend the weekend at the wilderness camp to see
if they're up to physical challenges of the program.
While in South Carolina, these students will have to face the additional
challenge of media scrutiny.

There's an eye in the sky looking out for Virginia Tech students heading
back to school this weekend.
It's not big brother, it's the Department of Transportation.
V-DOT has a camera mounted on the bottom of a small blimp.
Tech officials hope this high tech equipment will make the move-in process
easier by controlling traffic.

And at the gates Roanoke College, the twenty-first century arrived.
The record 440 members of the Class of 2000 converged on Salem today.
They came from as close as the Roanoke Valley and as far away as New Zealand
The Scholars and Honors Program at the College are experiencing big jumps in
participation this year.
Officials say the programs should grow more than 25- percent over the next
If you were travelling on Interstate 81 in Augusta County early this
morning-- more than likely you were delayed.
That's because State Police spent about 12 hours gathering cows off the

Roanoke and most surrounding cities did pick up some thunderstorms this

as part of a multi- million- dollar capital improvement program.

Roanoke's special events committee decided to try something different this
That's how the first annual Roanoke Blues and Jazz Festival was born.

But it is a good time, listening to great music.
The bands started around noon today and have been playing non-stop ever

The special events committee wanted to bring another festival to the star
But they also wanted to expose Roanoke to a different music venue.

single to right field Edgar Martinez rounds the bases to score and the game was

The college football season got off with a bang this afternoon. Brigham
young scoring in the closing minute of the game to beat 13-th ranked Texas A &
M 41 to 37.

With the addition of Blacksburg and Christiansburg, The Blue Ridge
District will be one of the toughest in the state this season.
And that makes it even more tougher for teams like Lord Botetourt to
Challenge for the district title.
But Cavalier head coach Andy Ward is not crying the Blues. The Cavaliers
have 19 starters returning, 10 on defense and 9 on offense.
Early in the pre season the practices focused on developing skills and in
order to do that the Cavaliers returned to the basics.
