One of three defendants in the murder of a Virginia Tech student is expected
to enter a guilty plea this afternoon.
Gary Wayne Barker is accused of being an accessory to capital murder in the
death of Alexander DeFilippis.
Barker also faces carjacking, robbery, abduction and four related firearms
charges in Montgomery County.
Jury selection had just begun in his trial this morning when the prosecutor
and the defense attorneys worked out a plea bargain.
Barker, who could have faced a total of six life terms in prison, will most
likely only face 53 years.
In exchange, he will likely have to testify against two co-defendants, Mark
Lilly and HIS brother, Ben Lilly.
The three allegedly carjacked and abducted DeFilippis at a Blacksburg
convenience store last December, then drove him to a remote area where he was
shot to death.
