For several years the community has feared one of its highest paying
employers would close for good.
Late yesterday Dupont announced that will happen in mid- 1998.

Dupont workers will receive a months pay for every two years of service.
But it may be harder for the area's local governments to wean themselves off
the Dupont dollars.

annual payroll of 35- million- dollars...and that money that pays property
taxes on houses, cars, and other items.
Before even considering property taxes, Henry County is betting the Dupont
departure will cost it it upwards of a million- dollars a year in lost tax

This is the second time this year the textile industry has dealt a big blow
to this area, following the pullout of Sara Lee Knit Products in March.
But by no means is this manufacturing sector dead and gone here...companies

thousands of residents.

A logging accident killed a 39 year- old Christiansburg man in Montgomery
County this morning.
The victim was working for a contractor on a logging job off of Taylor
Hollow Road in the Ellett Valley.
At the time of the accident, he was cutting trees with a chainsaw.

Authorities say the blow to the stomach knocked the victim several feet
backwards, and caused major internal injuries.
A co-worker heard the accident and ran to assist, but was unable to find a

A serious accident on Hollins Road
CLOSED the road for more than two hours this afternoon.
A Cadillac had just turned off Travilian onto Hollins Road when it ran into
an Oldsmobile station wagon.
Roanoke County police theorize that Grover Mayberry tried to avoid the
accident, but ran off the road, hit a pole and wound up hitting the other car
Mayberry was not wearing a seatbelt. He was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial
Hospital by Lifeguard 10.
The 81-year old North County man was scheduled for surgery tonight.
Botetourt County investigators have put together a case against Michael
Obremski-- the man who'd been making threatening phone calls to young girls.
Obremski was indicted twice today in Botetourt County, but Sheriff Reed
Kelly says there could have been even more charges.

They included threatening to abduct, taking indecent liberties with a minor

He'll be sentenced in Roanoke County next month.
She claimed to have a degree from a prestigious business school... then she
got a job as a bookkeeper at a Fincastle company.
Now all she has are 54 indictments to her name-- whatever her real name may

Botetourt County sheriff's deputies attempted to arrest the woman last week.
They tracked her down in Petersburg, only to find she has checked into a
mental health hospital.

A local amateur golf champion was indicted again today.
Penny Stallins was cited in Botetourt County this time.
Last month a Salem Grand Jury charged her with possession of cocaine, with
intent to distribute plus one count of marijuana possession.
As we reported at the time, the Salem case grew out of a drug bust in
Botetourt June 3rd.
Stallins was a Salem High School gym teacher and retired from Andrew Lewis
last year with a medical disability.
She's a three- time winner of the Roanoke Valley Hall of Fame Women's Golf
There are some new faces today at fire stations in the city of Roanoke.
Because of the merger of the Fire and Emergency Services departments, men
and women are now working side by side for the first time.

A ten-thousand-dollar reward is sitting unclaimed --it's being offered for
information about a plane that disappeared on a snowy West Virginia mountain on
its way to Virginia.
The pilot -- 31-year-old Colin Cambell -- was flying from West
Virginia to Lynchburg last November 28th when flight controllers
lost radio contact.
Searchers failed to find any trace of the plane.
Cambell's employer -- an Oregon construction company -- is putting up the
Capital Murder suspect Earl Bramblett will get his own private investigator
to help him prepare a defense.
Attorneys Mac Doubles and Terry Grimes asked the court for funds to hire
their own investigator.
It's not unusual for the judge to approve such a request in capital cases.
Without objection from the prosecutor, Judge Roy Willett okayed spending up
to three thousand dollars - to start with.
Bramblett is accused of killing a family of four in Vinton two years ago.
The Hodges murder investigation was so exhaustive and complex, it may be
next year before the case goes to trial.
The Chesapeake- based Christian Coalition has nothing to fear for now from
Republican Attorney General Jim Gilmore.
The Coalition founded by televangelist Pat Robertson is already facing
federal charges that it behaves like a partisan political committee -- but
doesn't follow public disclosure laws.
Fairfax state Senator Joe Gartlan -- a Democrat -- has twice asked Gilmore
for a legal opinion on a hypothetical group like the Christian Coalition.
Gilmore has now dodged it twice, saying the disclosure law is before the
federal court in Roanoke.

After reahabbing his injured shoulder in Salem last week, Bill Swift returned
to the big leagues last night to pitch for the Colorado Rockies.

The former all-star gave up five runs in five shaky innings, two coming on
