Western United States.
About 18-thousand people are battling the blazes which are burning on more
than 320-thousand acres in seven western states.
In Idaho, air tankers bombed a stubborn 12 thousand acre blaze on the
northern edge of Boise.
The fast-moving fire threatened an exclusive neighborhood yesterday, forcing
the evacuation of 500 homes.
In Southern California, a teenager confessed to starting a fire north of Los

close forever in mid 19-98 is creating speculation as to what the total impact

terrorizing a northwest Roanoke neighborhood.
One was killed instantly. The other was taken by animal control officers to

Police say the dogs chased workers back inside Burrell Nursing Center as
they were trying to leave during shift change.

The owner of the pit bulls, Geraldine Harper was issued a summons for
having dangerous dogs.
A former South Boston police officer will soon know what life is like on the
other side of the bars.
During the early morning hours... a jury convicted 42- year- old Larry
Jerome Stovall of embezzling funds and pocketing evidence.
Stovall worked as a narcotics investigator until earlier this year.
His attorney tried to persuade the jury that the missing money was nothing
more than a bookkeeping error.
But jurors didn't give Stovall sympathy.
Instead they gave him a 2- year jail term... and will force him to pay more
than 15- hundred dollars in fines.

Michael Obremski is looking at more charges, this time from Botetourt
A grand jury handed up indictments for the man
who made threatening phone calls to young girls in Roanoke County.
He pleaded no contest to those charges last month.
He now faces two charges in Botetourt County... where the case against him
has been open for some time.

Opponents of U-S military bases in Okinawa have suffered a major blow.
Japan's Supreme Court today upheld the government's policy of forcing
landowners to lease land to the U-S
About 35 landowners on Okinawa have been refusing to renew their leases with

But opposition exploded last fall when two U-S Marines and a sailor raped

Actor Greg Morris, one of the first African Americans to star in a major
television series, has been found dead in his Las Vegas home.

The cause of death remains unknown, although Morris had battled brain

A 39 year- old Christiansburg man died in a freak logging accident
It happened in Montgomery County.
The man was cutting a tree with a chainsaw when the tree split, and snapped
back into his stomach.
A co-worker ran to his aid but was unable to help.
The victim suffered major internal injuries and died at the scene.
Authorities are still trying to notify relatives and have not yet released
A local amateur golf champion is facing more drug charges.
Penny Stallins has now been indicted in Botetourt County.
She's been charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute...
plus one count of marijuana possesion.
Last month she received a similar indictment in Salem.
The case grew out of a drug bust in Botetourt County June 3rd.
Stallins is a three time winner of the Roanoke Valley Hall of Fame Women's

In Spain today, it was war..

Between eight to ten thousand Spaniards lobbed tomatoes at each other at the
annual tomato fight in Southern Spain.
The 44-year-old tradition started when friends in market stalls threw
tomatoes at each other for fun.
Ten tons of tomatoes were trucked into town from surrounding farms.
The hour-long tomato war as you can see leaves the town and participants
drenched and sometimes practically swimming in red pulp.
It's a strange friendship that started under unusual circumstances.

This Wild Canadian goose lost the ability to fly when the tip of its wing
was shot off.
It befriended Snickers the dog and now the two are fast friends.
Snicker's owner says she doesn't know why he puts up with it.
The goose, who she has named Wally, is constantly cleaning Snickers.
