On opportunity... the President cited his education and environmental initiatives.. and also claimed the budget can be balanced but in a socially responsible way.
CLINTON: AS LONG AS I AM PRESIDENT I WILL NEVER ALLOW CUTS THAT DEVASTATE EDUCATION/POLLUTE THE ENVIRONMENT, END THE GUARANTEE OF HEALTH CARE UNDER MEDICAID OR VIOLATE OUR DUTY TO OUR PARENTS UNDER MEDICARE. NEVER.
He called Bob Dole's 548 billion dollar tax cut a fiscally irresponsible lesson that time had proved unworkable... yet proposed a narrow capitol gains tax cut for homeowners..
And addressing the responsibility theme he called for tax credits for employers who hire welfare recipients... it was an effort to appease those who disagree with his acceptance of welfare reform. On community... the president cited his signing of family leave.. and taking on the tobacco industry to cut teen smoking. The President's message however was overshadowed by the resignation earlier in the day of Dick Morris... one of the president's closest campaign advisors.. and the creator of the 96 clinton/gore family campaign theme. According to a tabloid report Morris allegedly paid a prostitute $200 an hour for services for over a year and allowed her read drafts of the vice-president's as well as the first lady's convention speeches.
But on the convention floor the focus was the clinton/gore ticket... and solidifying their double digit lead in the polls.
