Also spelling trouble are Tropical Storms Fran and Gustav trailing behind.
Still no evacuations yet along the North Carolina coast....but forecasters
continue to monitor the progress of these storms at the national hurricane
Most of the year, the Center in Miami is a very quiet place.
That is not the case right now...the experts are focused on radar screens
and computer data...

Two people are dead, following an explosion at a New Hampshire Motel late

About half of the one-story, Rochester motel was destroyed by the blast--
it's still not clear how many rooms were occupied at the time.
The explosion filled the air with flames and black smoke, and scattered
debris onto neighboring businesses.
Witnesses report smelling gas shortly before the blast.
Is it for sale or isn't it?
That's the question many government officials in Rockbridge County and Buena
Vista have about the former Blue Bird plant.
The bus manufacturing company has had some good offers-- but for some reason
none have been accepted.

(( Blue Bird closed its Buena Vista plant in '92, putting about 200 people
out of work.
Since then, several companies have looked at the site.
One of the most enticing offers came recently from a Natural Bridge company.
Des Champs Labs offered to pay two- point- three million dollars.
That's 300- thousands more than the property's assessed value.
So what's the problem?

Having communications giant Ericsson Corporation nearby is paying dividends
for the city of Lynchburg.
Now, one of Ericsson's biggest components suppliers is expanding its
operations to the Hill City.
New York- based Tessy Plastics plans to build a new plant in the Lynchpin
Industrial Park off Lakeside Drive.
Tessy manufactures parts for cellular telephones, and Ericsson is one of its

Mitchell named her in a 2-million dollar lawsuit filed in federal court
Lieutenant Governor Don Beyer will NOT be in Buena Vista Monday for the
parade that has become Virginia's premier fall campaign event.
Beyer's campaign is busy squelching rumors today that family problems have
Beyer re-considering his Democratic bid for Governor next year.
A spokeswoman confirms Beyer's 20- year old son Donnie has been transferred
from a Winchester hospital to a treatment center in Western Maryland following
a suicide attempt last week.
The spokeswoman says the Lieutenant Governor's "feeling positive" about his
Beyer cancelled his trip to the Democratic convention to spend more time
The spokeswoman also confirms Beyer's grueling schedule has been re-designed
to cut down on some of his travel.
A source within the campaign tells News 7, Beyer was "exhausted" by his
The company that purchased Holdren's assets in June says it doesn't have to
honor THOUSANDS of service warranties that the financially troubled appliance
chain sold over the years.
The Crenshaw TV and Appliance Company of North Carolina says it will work
with the state and try to come up with a solution for the Holdren's customers.
The company says it did not anticipate having a problem like this when it
bought Holdren's assets.
The Crenshaw TV and Appliance Company owns nine stores in North Carolina;
the Crenshaw chain in Raleigh and the Kelly's chain in Greensboro.
The Better Business Bureau does not have any major complaints about those
chains on file.

Lifeguards to the rescue in Roanoke-- some last minute heroics will keep city
pools open for Labor Day.
Officials at Smith Mountain Lake are trying to head off any boating
problems before they start.

About 20 lifeguards threw Roanoke City officials a life-preserver today.
Yesterday the city sent out a plea asking for certified lifeguards to help
during this holiday weekend.
The number of lifeguards was low because many college students left for
That almost forced the city to close its two public pools, but 20 people
responded to the plea.
Now both pools will be open for the three day weekend.

On this day, Lewis and members of New River Valley Grotto, a group of
cavers, are on a Christiansburg office building with bats in the attic.
Rather than sealing it and killing the bats, the cavers drape a special
netting over the vents.

AND THEY'LL TRY TO GET BACK IN A COUPLE OF TIMES AND THEN END UP GOING
SOMEWHERE ELSE. ))
With increased development and fewer good caves or trees to call home, they
may just find other attics.
That doesn't mean we, in this region, need to worry about a group like this
taking up residence in our homes.
The small brown bats most prevalent here may be perfectly comfortable
hanging out in a bat house. Virginia Tech's Museum of Natural History has kits
to build your own.
You may even learn to appreciate them. One bat may eat several thousand bugs
each night. And certain species are critical for pollination.
