A trip to the beach may be on the line for holiday vacationers.
Hurricane Edouard is threatening to hit the mid-atlantic coast--
Also spelling trouble are Tropical Storms Fran and Gustav trailing behind.
Still no evacuations yet along the North Carolina coast....but forecasters
continue to monitor the progress of these storms at the national hurricane
center.
Most of the year, the Center in Miami is a very quiet place.
That is not the case right now...the experts are focused on radar screens

(( Thousands of bats screeching out of a cave create a menacing site, and
probably perpetuate the fears common to most people, though not necessarily
founded.

((BOB LEWIS/NRV GROTTO SOCIETY: THE VAST MAJORITY OF THEM CAN'T BITE YOU, THEY
DON'T HAVE ENOUGH STRENGTH IN THEIR JAW MUSCLES TO PENETRATE THE SKIN. OLD MYTH
ABOUT THEM WANTING TO FLY IN YOUR HAIR, THAT'S NOT TRUE. THEY'RE NOT DANGEROUS,
THEY'RE REALLY NEAT LITTLE CREATURES SO WE DO WANT TO TAKE CARE OF THEM AND
PROTECT THEM. ))

On this day, Lewis and members of New River Valley Grotto, a group of
cavers, are on a Christiansburg office building with bats in the attic.
Rather than sealing it and killing the bats, the cavers drape a special
netting over the vents.

((THIS ALLOWS THE BATS TO FLY OUT OF THE ATTIC AREA AND THEY CAN'T GET BACK IN.
AND THEY'LL TRY TO GET BACK IN A COUPLE OF TIMES AND THEN END UP GOING
SOMEWHERE ELSE. ))

With increased development and fewer good caves or trees to call home, they
may just find other attics.
That doesn't mean we, in this region, need to worry about a group like this
taking up residence in our homes.
The small brown bats most prevalent here may be perfectly comfortable
hanging out in a bat house. Virginia Tech's Museum of Natural History has kits
to build your own.
You may even learn to appreciate them. One bat may eat several thousand bugs
each night. And certain species are critical for pollination.

((FOR EXAMPLE, THE GUAVA FRUIT THAT GROWS IN THE TROPICS. IT WOULD NOT EXIST IF
IT WEREN'T FOR BATS. THEY ARE THE ONLY CREATURES THAT POLLINATE THESE TREES. ))

The National Spelological Society has 177 grotto groups nationwide. Most,

like the New River Valley's, will provide bat removal free of charge. Tracy
