Vacationers are fleeing the beaches of Cape Cod and its neighboring islands
as Hurricane ``Edouard'' barrels toward the area.

Ten people in South Carolina who wanted to pay their respects at the site
where Susan Smith drowned her young sons-- were instead met with a disaster of

Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is ordering his troops to pull out of the
Kurdish city of Irbil... 24 hours after U-S forces in the area were placed on
The announcement was made on Iraqi television in Baghdad today.
Saddam's forces captured the city yesterday, and was in full control with
the help of Kurdish rebels.
Despite the withdrawal order, there are NO signs that Iraqi forces have
actually left Irbil.

One man is dead and another charged with murder after a fight in the town of
Police responded to a call late Saturday at a restaurant called Roy's
24-year- old Luis Antonio Zecena and Roberto Escobar, also 24, were taken to
Twin County Regional Hospital with knife wounds to the chest and side.
Zecena died at the hospital.
Escobar's condition has not been released.
Police are holding 22-year-old Joel Rosas Maldonado in the Grayson County
Jail on 100-thousand dollars bond.
The North Carolina man is charged with murder and malicious wounding.
Careless smoking may have been the cause of a fire that gutted a Vinton
apartment this morning.
The fire marshal says the resident told him she fell asleep with a cigarette

They represent 32 states and 11 countries.
The community is turning out to show its support for the Brosville Volunteer
A festival and telethon was held recently with the goal of raising 35-
thousand dollars for the department.
Fire officials weren't quite able to reach that goal-- but they did raise
more than 20- thousand dollars.
The money will be used to either repair or build a new fire station.
Fire officials say the existing facility is unsound because it's resting on
"fill dirt" which has caused the floor to sink.
The department needs a total of 110-thousand dollars.
The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors has pledged 30-thousand dollars
toward the project.

They have no contract but
160 workers at Westvaco's Low Moor plant will be back on the job Tuesday.
The employees are represented by United Paperworkers Union Local four-90.

This weekend after two weeks of negotiations the rank and file soundly
defeated the company's new contract offer.
98 percent of those voting turned thumbs down on the proposal.
Union representatives say new bargaining talks will be scheduled soon, and in

is making moves to keep up with changing times.
The once- HIGH- FLYING, high tech firm fell upon hard times and had to lay
off 50 people.
While the company's not out of the woods yet, it does have a number of
promising developments on the horizon.

The corporation manages the property and he says the last thing this
neighborhood needs is a vacant lot.

Virginia head coach George Welsh has named the starting quarterback for the
Cavaliers opener against Central Michigan.
Welsh has tapped fifth year player Tim Sherman to start the season opener.
Sherman played six games at quarterback last season behind Mike Groh. He
completed 11 of 17 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns.
Welsh also indicated that quarterback Aaron Brooks would see action in the
