At the South Carolina lake where Susan Smith drowned her two young sons...
the lake claimed the lives of SEVEN people last night.
Four children are among the dead. Five of the victims were from one
They had gone to the lake to visit the memorial to the boys who died...
Apparently five people got out of the van and a short time later it began to
roll into the lake.
As the vehicle rolled down the ramp and into the water, two adults dived in
to help but were unable to reach the victims.
Two people were injured and their apartment gutted by fire in Vinton this

The injured residents were treated and released from the hospital.
A fight in the town of Galax turned deadly last night.
Police responded to a call just before midnight at a restaurant called Roy's
24-year- old Luis Antonio Zecena (ZEH-see-nah) and Roberto Escobar, also 24,
were taken to Twin County Regional Hospital with knife wounds to the chest and
Zecena died at the hospital.
Escobar's condition has not been released.
Police are holding 22-year-old Joel Rosas Maldonado in the Grayson County
Jail on 100-thousand dollars bond.
The North Carolina man is charged with murder and malicious wounding.

160 workers at Westvaco's Low Moor plant are now working without a contract.
The employees are represented by United Paperworkers Union Local 4-90.

This weekend after two weeks of negotiations the rank and file soundly
defeated the company's new contract offer.
98 percent of those voting turned thumbs down on the proposal.
Union representatives say new bargaining talks will be scheduled soon, and in
the meantime there are no plans for any kind of work stoppage or strike.
The Brosville Volunteer Fire Department is one step closer to achieving its
A festival and telethon was held recently with the goal of raising 35-
Fire officials weren't quite able to reach that goal-- but they did raise
more than 20- thousand dollars.
The money will be used to either repair or build a new fire department.
Fire officials say the existing facility is unsound because it's resting on
"fill dirt" which has caused the floor to sink.
The department needs a total of 110-thousand dollars.
The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors has pledged 30-thousand dollars
toward the project.
The coast is clear for many vacationers in North Carolina and Virginia...

People there are heading inland as Hurricane ``Edouard'' approaches.
By this afternoon the storm was about 220 miles south of Nantucket Island
with winds down to 105 miles per hour.
Forecasters say the storm should weaken over the next 24 hours, but
hurricane conditions could reach southeastern New England after midnight.
A hurricane warning remains in effect from Rhode Island to Massachusetts.

Martin Jeffrey works with Total Action Against Poverty and sits on the board
of the 19th and Melrose Corporation.
The corporation manages the property and he says the last thing this
neighborhood needs is a vacant lot.
He says it continues the perception that this is not a viable neighborhood.

Crenshaw TV and Appliance of North Carolina angered thousands of people by
deciding not to honor extended maintenance warranties sold by Holdren's.
Economic developers in Rockbridge County are becoming frustrated in their
efforts to sell the vacant Blue Bird schoolbus plant in Buena Vista.
The schoolbus company has turned down several offers to buy the plant from
Natural Bridge based- DesChamps Labs.
And a major supplier for Lynchburg's Ericsson Corporation will set up its
own plant in the Hill city and create 120 new jobs.
Tessy Plastics of New York will set up shop in the Lynchpin Industrial Park.

Jeff Gordon continue to dominate the track at Darlington. He made his
move late in the race and he held off Hut Stricklin taking the checkered flag
in the Southern 500.

Dale Jarrett started on the pole and his run at the million dollar bonus
ended on lap 47 when he ran through some oil and hit the wall he went three
Rusty Wallace was also involved in a crash in the same spot sending him to

of the race shortly after lap 65.
Dale Earnhardt was having handling problems he goes to the pits for fuel
and a tire change he was running 21-st at the time.
Hut Stricklin came from way back to take the lead with 174 laps and he

Earnhardt got back on the track and was on the move but he hits the wall
in turn two causing a series of wrecks involving several cars.
