Our first story is a bizzare and tragic one.
At the South Carolina lake where Susan Smith drowned her two young sons... the lake claimed the lives of SEVEN people last night.

Four children are among the dead. Five of the victims were from one family.
They had gone to the lake to visit the memorial to the boys who died...
Apparently five people got out of the van and a short time later it began to roll into the lake.
As the vehicle rolled down the ramp and into the water, two adults dived in to help but were unable to reach the victims.

A fight in the town of Galax turned deadly last night.
Police responded to a call just before midnight at a restaurant called Roy's Underground.
24-year- old Luis Antonio Zecena (ZEH-see-nah) and Roberto Escobar, also 24, were taken to Twin County Regional Hospital with knife wounds to the chest and side.
Zecena died at the hospital.
Escobar's condition has not been released.
Police are holding 22-year-old Joel Rosas Maldonado in the Grayson County Jail on 100-thousand dollars bond.
The North Carolina man is charged with murder and malicious wounding.

98 percent of those voting turned thumbs down on the proposal.

The Brosville Volunteer Fire Department is one step closer to achieving its goal.

Fire officials weren't quite able to reach that goal-- but they did raise more than 20- thousand dollars.
The money will be used to either repair or build a new fire department.
Fire officials say the existing facility is unsound because it's resting on "fill dirt" which has caused the floor to sink.

By this afternoon the storm was about 220 miles south of Nantucket Island with winds down to 105 miles per hour.
Forecasters say the storm should weaken over the next 24 hours, but hurricane conditions could reach southeastern New England after midnight.

Jeff Gordon continue to dominate the track at Darlington. He made his move late in the race and he held off Hut Stricklin taking the checkered flag in the Southern 500.

Dale Jarrett started on the pole and his run at the million dollar bonus ended on lap 47 when he ran through some oil and hit the wall he went three laps down.
Rusty Wallace was also involved in a crash in the same spot sending him to the pits.
Jimmy Spencer made his move and he blew by Ken Schrader to take the lead of the race shortly after lap 65.
Dale Earnhardt was having handling problems he goes to the pits for fuel and a tire change he was running 21-st at the time.
Hut Stricklin came from way back to take the lead with 174 laps and he would remain up front until near the end of the race.
Earnhardt got back on the track and was on the move but he hits the wall in turn two causing a series of wrecks involving several cars.
But Gordan waited until the end passing Stricklin and crusing to victory for his second straight Southern 500 win.
