Salem firefighters responded to a house fire tonight in the 18-hundred block
of Pexton Avenue.
It started around 7:45.
According to fire officials neighbors saw smoke and flames coming from the

Authorities have not determined the cause of the blaze and are still

Police say her mother, 32 year old Carla Lockwood confessed.
4 year old Nadine was denied food while her six other siblings were fed
and cared for.
Neighbors had called child welfare but social workers who visited the house
did not discover the girl.

Two teenagers remain hospitalized tonight, seriously injured in an accident
in Botetourt County.
It happened just before two on Route 43 between Eagle Rock and Buchanan.
State police say the driver of a pickup truck lost control as it was coming
around a curve, and ran off the road into a field.
The driver was thrown from the truck; the passenger stayed inside.
Both were taken by Lifeguard 10 to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
State police say since they are teenagers, their names will not be released.
Because of their sensitive nature,
cases involving allegations of child sexual abuse present many problems for
social workers and police investigators.
But a team approach in Pittsylvania County is working well.

The following two years the case load remained about the same.

More than 500 World War Two Veterans and their families are in Roanoke
tonight for a 50th reunion.
These veterans are part of the 106th Infantry Division Association.
Some were P-O-W's or severely injured during the Battle of the Bulge.
Organizers and veterans say reunions help heal old wounds.

Virginia state and fire officials are developing strategies to prevent the
burnings of black churches throughout the Commonwealth.
A nine-point legislative package is scheduled to be unveiled in
Richmond on Wednesday at a statewide conference.
Attorney General James Gilmore says the plan is aimed at protecting houses of
worship both from arson and vandalism.

Roanoke pool managers say this summer has been great for the kids and staff.
What was Hurricane Edouard made for a less than perfect Labor Day Weekend
for many vacationers along Cape Cod.
Edouard packed 120 mile an hour winds as it headed toward the coast
bringing rain- high surf and downing many trees.
The Hurricane also left many people without power. But experts say it isn't
as bad as it could have been.
Meanwhile all eyes are now on Hurricane Fran- She could hit the U-S anywhere
from Florida to the Carolinas.
Forecasters say Fran is still about three days away.

The Lynchburg Hillcats came into tonight's regular season finale at Salem
Memorial stadium needing a win over the Avalanche and a loss by the Wilmington
Bluerocks to keep alive their hopes of winning the Northern division's second
