The strike began early Tuesday, and lasted less than an hour.
The pentagon is saying little more than several dozen cruise missiles were launched from both Navy ships and Air Force B-52 Bombers in the region, aimed at unidentified Iraqi military targets, punishment for Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's decision to send more than 30-thousand troops into Northern Iraq to fight the kurds.
Yesterday, Hussein claimed his troops were leaving the town of Irbil, the original point of attack....but the White House said there were no signs of the complete withdrawal it demanded, and so the preparations for the onslaught proceeded.
And so did the criticism.
At a campaign rally in Salt Lake City, Arizona Senator John McCain, a foreign policy advisor to republican presidential candidate Bob Dole, blasted the administration's policy in the Persian Gulf. ((SEN. JOHN MCCAIN/R-ARIZONA: FOR SOME TIME NOW, SADDAM HAS BEEN TESTING AMERICAN RESOLVE AND WE HAVE BEEN FAILING THE TEST. INDEED WEAK SIGNALS.....SADDAM HUSSEIN.))
Later dole himself released a statement saying "America and its allies and friends around the world can no longer tolerate Saddam's repeated attempts to erode the restraints that have been placed on his regime and to violently reassert his authority."
Dole also said he stands behind our men and women in uniform.
The president is scheduled to make a formal statement about the attack at

Authorities say Lockwood told them she had not fed Nadine regularly for a year and did not seek medical help -- even when she realized the girl was dying, because she didn't lover or want the girl.
Lockwood has been charged with second-degree murder.

Gunfire erupted last night at a Richmond hospital.
When it was all over, a woman was dead, her husband was wounded and another woman was dead of a heart attack.
The woman who allegedly did the shooting was shot by police. She is in stable condition.
Officials said the shooting stemmed from a domestic argument.
The dead woman and her husband had brought three gunshot victims to the hospital moments before the shooting started.
The woman who died of the heart attack was one of them.

A tractor trailer slid through an intersection in Halifax County last night, killing two men.
25- year- old Terry Morrell Anderson and 24- year- old Jeremy Levelle Ferrell, both of Halifax, were killed when their pickup truck was trapped under the trailer's rear wheels.
The accident happened at the intersection of US 360 and route 716 in Halifax County.
State Police are still investigating the crash-- no charges have been filed at this time.

Two teenagers were seriously injured yesterday in an accident in Botetourt County.

It happened on Route 43 between Eagle Rock and Buchanan.
State police say the driver of a pickup truck lost control as it was coming around a curve, and ran off the road into a field.
The driver was thrown from the truck; the passenger stayed inside.
Both were taken by Lifeguard 10 to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
State police say since they are teenagers, their names will not be released.
