In the Persian Gulf today, the U-S gave it's response to the weekend Iraqi attack on a U-N designated safe zone.
The U-S launched 27 cruise missiles at Iraqi military defense targets.
Iraqi T-V reorts five people were killed in the U-S strike.
President Clinton ordered the air assault, calling it a blunt message to Saddam Hussein.
Mr. Clinton also said the U-S is also extending the no-fly zone in Iraq.
The United States is now waiting to see how Saddam reacts to today's air strike.

((F-14 Fighters aboard the U.S.S. Carl Vinson provided air support for the missile strikes, which were launched from ships in the Vinson's battle group in the Persian Gulf, and from two B-52 bombers originating in Guam. The cruise missiles were aimed at military targets south of Baghdad, including surface-to-air missile bases and radar installations. ((WILLIAM PERRY, DEFENSE SECRETARY, SADDAM IS CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER TO THE REGION)) The missile strikes were in retaliation for the Iraqi army's invasion of Kurdish territory that was supposed to be considered safe under a united nations mandate.
The town of Irbil is located north of the 36th parallel, the boundary of the northern no-fly zone.
President clinton said this morning Saddam Hussein had to be punished for attacking his own people. ((PRESIDENT CLINTON:))
The president also announced that another no-fly zone in southern Iraq would be enlarged to bring it closer to Baghdad, in hopes of further limiting Iraq's offensive capabilities.

In a firey speech shown on Iraqi television, Saddam defied the U.S., saying he would no longer recognize the no-fly zones, and urged his soldiers to fight back.

Two Halifax men are dead after a tractor trailer slid through an intersection into their truck.
Twenty-five year old Terry Morrell Anderson and 24- year- old Jeremy Levelle Ferrell were killed last night when their pickup truck was trapped under the trailer's rear wheels.
The accident happened at the intersection of U-S 3-60 and route 7-16 in Halifax County.
State Police say no charges have been filed at this time.
