Tonight half a million people are being evacuated from Coastal South
Carolina- where Fran is expected to hit by this time tomorrow night.

Residents want the state to take over the road's maintenance-- but it'll
cost a quarter- of- a- million dollars just to get it up to code.

Governor Allen saw the flooding damage first hand
when he flew to Danville this afternoon.
The hardest hit- theFall Creek Community in Danville.
Last night, the creek looked more like the Dan River in strength and size.
The Governor and with local dignitaries, toured the area for several hours.
Downed power lines were scattered around the area-- as well as tree limbs
and other debris.
Several houses were damaged by high water and mud-- some worse than others.
One home was swept from its foundation-- a nearby church was also damaged.

More questions tonight about celebrity clothing lines possibly being made
Authorities in Brooklyn, New York raided four garment factories today -
including one which makes clothes for Kathy Ireland's K-Mart line.
No word on whether that particular factory was cited for any problems.
K-Mart has promised action against any sweatshop operators.
The sweatshops and celebrity issue came to the public's attention
recently when the Kathie Lee Gifford Wal-Mart clothing line came under fire.

Elm Avenue is the first stop for Roanoke's rental inspection program.
But by early next year, three areas will receive the attention of city
This week, the city is sending notices to owners of property on Elm Avenue
between Jefferson Street and the Wasena Bridge.

Rental inspections could begin on Orange Avenue Northwest in December, and
Bullit and Jamison Avenues Southeast early next year.

Gilmore's proposals include a penalty of up to life in prison for being
armed with a deadly weapon when breaking into a church with the intent to
Carilion Radford Community Hospital is planning a Spring groundbreaking for
a new facility- now that the state health commissioner has given approval.
R-C-H's application was chosen over a joint competing proposal submitted by
Columbia/H-C-A of Montgomery County and Pulaski.
R-C-H plans to build a 97-bed hospital near the intersection of
Interstate-81 and Route 177 in Montgomery County.

The rain made for some tense moments in Roanoke County...
For more than an hour, fire crews waited to enter this house on Knowles
A liquid oxygen tank was being stored in the basement... and when flood
waters ripped through the ground- level, the tank started to leak.
That meant the house was in danger of exploding.
The owner of the home, Dan Fargnoli needs the oxygen to survive.
Both he and his wife had to be evacuated.

Virginia Tech is bracing itself for more than the possible backlash of Fran.
News 7 Sports has learned that head basketball coach Bill Foster will
announce he is retiring at the end of the 1996-97 season at an 11am

The popular head coach turned 60 on April Fools day this year, and some of
his peers in the coaching ranks believe he's been thinking about retirement for
past several months.
Ironically, Foster came out of retirement to take over the Tech program in
1991. In five years his teams have won over 80 games, an NIT Championship and
an NCAA tournament invitation. He also won his 500 career game last season in
Foster has made no secret that he would like for current assistant Bobby
Hussey to succeed him at Tech.
A successor is not expected to be named tomorrow.
At the University of Virginia, Harold Deane has rejoined the men's basketball
team for preseason workouts.
Back in June, head coach Jeff Jones asked Deane to take a leave of absence
from the squad to concentrate of academics and respond to criminal charges he
faced at the time.
Jones says Deane, who was found guilty of trespassing and resisting arrest
last month, has made good progress this summer.
However, no decision on whether he wil join the team when practice begins on
October 15th has been made at this time.

Virginia Tech head football coach Frank Beamer will put himself in the record
books when he steps on the field this Saturday in Akron.
