Heavy downpours have flooded creeks, prompting evacuations in some areas and
washing out several streets.

Raging waters raced through Roanoke Valley streams and rivers today, as two
days of steady rainfall pushed banks to their limits.

The flood waters weren't as high in Roanoke County... but the danger levels
Fire officials were afraid this house on Knowles Road was going to explode.
A liquid oxygen tank used for life support started to leak... after the
basement of the home began filling up with water.
Dan Fargnoli and his wife Josephine had to be evacuated as gas filled the

The city fire department got Norfolk Southern to open the gate to railroad
property next to the park, so the stranded motorists could drive along the
tracks to get around the low-water bridges.
Today's heavy rains also brought high water along Mudlick Road in Roanoke,
and headaches for drivers who were forced to detour.
The water level rose quickly at mid- morning, and emergency crews
scrambled to close the street.
They had to turn back more than one driver intent on crossing the flooded

With the possibility of more rain during the next couple of days, city
officials also urged residents to take the usual precautions, and make sure
they have adequate supplies of food and water.

Roanoke's new rental inspection program.
Today, city officials formally launched the program, while neighborhood
leaders lauded the effort.

In the works for more than a year, the rental inspection program was
spurred by the fatal fire in january that killed five members of one family.
And while some neighborhood leaders wanted a tougher ordinance, Roanoke
Landlord Bob Fetzer believes the rental inspection program is a good first step
toward addressing a complicated problem.

And Tiki Barber set their sights on some big personal milestones as they get
ready to kick off the college season on Saturday.
Virginia Tech has called an 11am news conference for tomorrow to discuss what
officials are describing as a major announcement.
News 7 Sports has learned that the major part concerns head basketball coach
Bill Foster, who will announce tomorrow that he is retiring at the end of the

The popular head coach turned 60 on April Fools day this year, and some of
his peers in the coaching ranks believe he's been thinking about retirement for
past several months.
Ironically, Foster came out of retirement to take over the Tech program in
1991. In five years his teams have won over 80 games, an NIT Championship and
an NCAA tournament invitation. He also won his 500 career game last season in
Foster has made no secret that he would like for current assistant Bobby
Hussey to succeed him at Tech.
A successor is not expected to be named tomorrow.
Foster's good friend, Hokies football boss Frank Beamer also has some big
plans for this week.

With 54 yards this Saturday he will vault into 9th place on the UVa career
rushing list. Tiki needs 1320 yards to become Virginia's all time leading

achieve this goal and surpass one of college football's best tailbacks ever
would be a dream come true for the former cave Spring star.

While coaching in the ACC, Welsh has accumulated 98 wins, which ties him

The NCAA has now recognized UVa for having the longest streak of games with
an interception with 29.

Emmitt Smith showed up at the Cowboys practice facility today having shed his
neck brace but not his stuff neck.
Smith says despite the soreness, he thinks he's doing pretty well.
He's listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the New York
Giants at Texas Stadium, but don't be surprised if he plays.
The US Open tennis championships are bracing for what could be a windy, west
weekend from its new top seed Fran.
