Two Virginians are dead as a result of what was Tropical Storm Fran.
A 53-year old woman in Highland County died when she tried to cross a
flooded creek in an all-terrain vehicle.
And a man in Fairfax County was killed when his car slammed into a tree that
fell into the highway.
Meanwhile, the National Weather Service predicts the Roanoke River will
crest at midnight.

Forecasters thought the Roanoke River would crest about 8 feet above flood
As it ends up it is cresting about four feet lower at 14.
Needless to say the threat of flooding had most everyone taking safety

At about 3-30, they began evacuating more than 600 residents from the Willow
River Apartment complex in Salem.

State emergency coordinators are juggling flash floods, record power
outages, and record river flooding.
V-DOT says 64 primary and 575 secondary roads were closed at last count.

Eastern Montgomery County is waterlogged tonight, as residents and highway
crews prepare for flood cleanup there.

(( Residents along Alleghany Springs Road fled their homes and the south fork
of the Roanoke River, expecting to drive elsewhere to seek shelter.
But water claimed the road, trapping about 50 people, and several police
officers at a nearby store.
With nowhere to go, some kept a helpless eye on their homes.

All over eastern Montgomery County, raging creeks overtook roads and sent
residents in search of higher ground.
Even some who didn't want to leave eventually gave in to reason, or in this
case, orders from a state trooper.
Rescuers say it would make their jobs easier and safer if people wouldn't
wait till the last minute.

Fran was anything but ladylike to central Virginia, as she toppled trees and
power lines, and dumped up to ten inches of rain on the region.
All the excess water wreaked havoc on area roadways..
Several main arteries in and around Lynchburg were blocked as floodwaters
turned once-calm lakes into raging torrents of water.
The good news was the storm showed up a few hours early, before residents
started to venture out into it.

Residents of Campbell County's Timber Lake subdivision had reason to cheer
A second dam collapse there was averted when engineers dug a channel in the
new dam. That allowed excess water to pass through.
It WILL set the repair work back about three weeks, but neighbors say saving
the rebuilt dam was worth it.
Lots of rain, high winds and downed power lines, but Rockbridge County
officials still feel lucky.
Just the mention of flooding makes Rockbridge County residents anxious.
But the flood prone area escaped Fran without serious wide spread damage.
The road to Collierstown was treacherous.
Buffalo Creek ran out of it's banks swallowing up parts of route 251.
The South River also had the same appetite, consuming South River Road.
But the high winds that traveled with Fran left many residents in the dark.

And the emergency relief shelters that the county opened Thursday night were
not widely used.

An autopsy revealed that an elderly Marion woman was strangled to death.
68 year-old Anna Jean Anderson was found dead in her home on Culbert Street
late Wednesday night.
A neighbor alerted police after entering her home to check on her and
becoming suspicious when things appeared out of place.
Police said today they have no suspects.
A Marine helicopter traveling with President Clinton's entourage crashed in
