First, we begin our coverage tonight in Gretna-- where officials have spent
the past 24 hours searching for a man missing since his car was swept away
following the recent floods.
We just now received word from the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's department
that 60-year-old John Perkins has been found dead.
The details around his death have not been released.
Perkins' car had been located earlier today near a bridge on business Route

In South Boston, waters that had receded overnight began to rise again as
the town braced for a second cresting of the Dan River.
Lowlying businesses remained partially submerged, entire roadways were
blocked...giving new meaning to the phrase "you can't get there from here".

They assured residents that help was on the way.

Smith Mountain Lake climbed out of its banks today, creating anxious moments
for some residents.
American Electric Power officials say the lake crested-- full pond.
But residents on the Black Water section of the lake say usually the water
is higher there than at the dam.
So they've learned to expect more water than officials predict.
Today the water lapped at the Crawford's lakeside home.
In 19-85 water reached the WINDOWS of the lower level of the house.

In Salem, 600 people were evacuated from the Willow River Apartments
Today they returned with moving vans and vehicles to move back in.
However, some residents are fed up with the floods and are moving out.

While Fran is gone, she won't be soon forgotten....especially along the
coast of North Carolina.
More than half a million Carolina residents are still in the dark,
In the town of Topsail, most of the oceanfront homes were either seriously
damaged or completely destroyed.
The storm ripped apart houses, cars, roads, and trees-- and left sand piled
six-feet high on the streets.
All told Hurricane Fran is to blame for 22 deaths-- including a woman in
53-year-old Selma Botkin was killed when the all-terrain vehicle she was
driving was swept away in flood waters yesterday afternoon.
Another death occurred in Fairfax, in Northern Virginia.
The count includes another 16 deaths in North Carolina-- four were reported
today, plus another two in South Carolina and two in West Virginia.

according to his lawyer.

Dow Corning is making a last push for claims from anyone who says they
were harmed by the company's breast implant products.
The court-ordered, eight million-dollar campaign begins tomorrow with an
ad in "U-S-A Today."
The filing deadline is January 15th, 1997.
Hundreds of thousands of women claim silicone breast implants made by Dow
Corning caused a variety of health problems.
Dow Corning stopped making the implants in 1992, and is now under

At Ohio's Case Western Reserve University, scientists think the gene that
controls development of the nervous system-- is also required for development
