(( Daybreak shed a new light on southside today, from the land and from the air, the legacy of tropical storm Fran was widespread and costly.
In South Boston, waters that had receded overnight began to rise again as the town braced for a second cresting of the Dan River.
Lowlying businesses remained partially submerged, entire roadways were blocked...giving new meaning to the phrase "you can't get there from here". ((DAN SLEEPER: DEALING WITH PEOPLE CAN BE A MAJOR PROBLEM BECAUSE THEY WANT TO DO WHAT THEY WANT TO DO, AND THEY'RE CAUSING PROBLEMS FOR THE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO DO SOMETHING LEGITIMATE.))
The need for federal assistance here is very legitimate.
Late this afternoon, Governor George Allen hooked up with Senators Chuck Robb and John Warner and Congressman L.F. Payne at the Danville Regional Airport.
All four had been touring the area by bus and through the skies.. seeing with their own eyes the severity of the situation.
They assured residents that help was on the way. ((SENATOR JOHN WARNER: UNCLE SAM WILL MOVE VERY SWIFTLY TO HELP. THESE ARE TAX DOLLARS THAT ARE COMING BACK TO THIS COMMUNITY FOR PEOPLE WHO SUFFERED DEVASTATING LOSSES.))
Damage from Fran has kept FEMA secretary James Lee Witt busy the past few days.
Witt says President Clinton has heard the area's cry for help. ((JAMES LEE WITT: HE JUST WANTS TO MAKE SURE THAT THE MONEY.. THAT'S BEEN AFFECTED.))
Witt says that assistance will come in the form of grants and low- interest loans for homeowners and businesses that have trouble coping with their sudden losses.
For the town of South Boston, that price tag could top fourteen million dollars.

SUPER=03-Franktown, CO; :

Hamburger here, a 300-pound Berkshire pig, is entering the herding competition-- along with a couple of his pals, including Hamlet, now busy with a mudbath.
While pigs are pretty smart, they still have no herding instinct... but Hamburger has been working with the neighbor's sheep for the past week.
The top prize for the competition is 500- bucks, and Hamburger is hoping to (-------------------) bring home some bacon.
