flooding conditions around the region.
SS=Southside Flooding
The most serious damage has of course occurred in Danville and Pittsylvania
County-- where state and federal officials flew in today to survey the
after-effects.
The Dan River is the culprit there-- it crested this morning at near-record
flood levels.

Danville residents are still feeling the impact of tropical storm Fran.

Some businesses are remian closed and many residents are still without
power.
Federal officials toured the area again today so some help may soon be on
the way.

(( For the second time in a week flood waters rocked the Mount Carmel Baptist
Church.
And for the second time in as many day Governor George Allen visited the
Water Street church.
This time FEMA officials, Senator John Warner and Senator Chuck Robb joined
him in assessing the damage in Danville.
Everything inside the church was a total loss.

The flood waters are receeding, but two main thoroughfares, River Street and
Goodyear Blvd., are still closed.
And five to six thousands homes in the city are still without power.

restored to all Danville residents.

Hurricane Fran is to blame for 21 deaths-- including a woman in Highland
County.
53-year-old Selma Botkin was killed when the all-terrain vehicle she was
driving was swept away in flood waters yesterday afternoon.
Another death occurred in Fairfax, in Northern Virginia.
The count includes another 16 deaths in North Carolina-- four were reported
today, plus another two in South Carolina and two in West Virginia.
