of South Boston and Riverdale are still underwater.

Some North Carolina residents returned to their beachfront homes today.

It's been five days since Hurricane Fran ripped through this seaside town.

Back in Virginia, the Potomac is well above flood level.
President Clinton toured the areas hardest hit by flooding and promised
A family in Montvale is homeless after a fire ripped through their home.
Their trailer caught fire just before eight this morning.
Firefighters got their quickly, but the flames and smoke still left the
building a total loss.
Paul Mitchum, his wife and FIVE children heard the smoke detectors go off
and escaped without getting hurt.
An investigator thinks faulty wiring from a clock radio may have started the

An early- morning blaze in Montgomery County sent a sheriff's deputy to the

Chief Wells says a number of fire fighters were treated for heat exhaustion.
Deputy Bolejack, was released from the hospital and is reportedly in good
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The Bank of Fincastle was robbed today.
It happened about 1:20 this afternoon, at the Daleville branch.
A Botetourt County detective says a man wearing a green ski mask ran into
the bank, leaped over a desk, cleaned out three cash drawers, and ran back out.
The robber was NOT armed.
Just a few minutes later, a county deputy spotted him, chased him on foot
and caught him.
The suspect is 30-year-old David Ray Martin of Botetourt County.
The money was found.

At one school in Roanoke City, it was a week late, but today marked the

A study out of Austria connects photocopier toner and lung disease.

Airline employees with access to security areas- may soon be suject to
background and fingerprint checks.
That's according to President Clinton who says he also supports installing
improved bomb detection equipment at airports.
He'll seek one billion dollars from Congress to make the changes.

Clinton made the suggestions after receiving a recommendations from a
special panel on air safety.
Whitewater Defendant Susan McDougal turned herself into Federal Marshals
this morning- and was off to jail.

McDougal was found in contempt of court- for refusing to answer questions.
The former real estate partner of the Clintons says she would rather go to
jail than answer prosecutors questions in front of a grand jury.

Earlier this year McDougal was found guilty of fraud, she was sentenced to
two years in prison.
Trigon is just days away from state approval for its bid to become a
private, FOR-profit corporation.
The public had its chance to object or support the state's largest health

Scientists are reporting a breakthrough in understanding the role of the
BRAIN during dreams.

A team of international scientists say they may have found the key to the
next generation of cancer treatments.
It all lies in a single gene---called "x-p-f"....which works to repair
damage done by cancer-causing agents like the sun.
Without the properly-working gene... D-N-A can mutate--causing tumors.
Researchers say they've already identified most of the thirty or so other
genes involved in cell repair.
Their report was published in the journal "cell."
A new gene therapy could be ready to test on sickle cell anemia patients
within a year.
Scientist at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia say they've
developed a synthetic molecule that corrects the gene mutation causing sickle
The disease affects 50-thousand Americans, most of them black.
It causes flawed, or sickle-shaped red blood cells, resulting in severe
pain and anemia, even death.
Researchers say the gene therapy is not a cure, but it could greatly
relieve the symptoms.

Austrian doctors are issuing a warning to watch out for the copying
The British Medical Journal LANCET reports that a man apparently developed
a serious lung disease from exposure to photocopier toner, and the tiny metal
particles used in the product.

For the first time, scientists in Belgium have actually been able to watch
WHAT the brain does during a dream.
While patients slept, the researchers used sophisticated imaging
techqniques to identify the parts of the brain that were turned on or off
during a dream.
Watching the brain circuits interact, they were able to actually see the
physical manifestations of brain activity.
They found one of the regions most active when we dream is the same one
that's responsbile for emotions.
Also interesting is that the parts of the brain that give us a sense of
time, and helps us remember things-- were turned off during dreaming.
That may help explain why we often can't remember our dreams when we wake

A clergyman, a civil rights ground-breaker and a former presidential
They're among the eleven people honored today with the nation's highest
honor-- the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Cardinal Joseph Bernardin (BURN'-uh-deen), of Chicago, one of the most
prominent Catholic priests in the country received the medal of Freedom.
He announced last month that he has terminal cancer.
Also honored, James Brady, Ronald Reagan's press secretary in 1981.
Brady was wounded in John Hinckley's attack on the president.
He and his wife have waged a battle to keep handguns out of criminals'
President Clinton also presented the medal to Rosa Parks, who helped spark
the civil rights movement when she refused to give up her seat on a bus in
