Hurricane Fran is long gone, but it's still causing major problems in some
Thousands are still without power from North Carolian through Pennsylvania
and many roads remain closed.
The death count has climbed to 29 with a half dozen people still missing.

Hurricane Fran's death toll in Virginia has risen to 11.
Two people died as the result of a car accident on Friday.
21- year- old Anthony Long drove his car off route 6-58, resulting in the
death of his passenger, 16-year old Susan Meadows.
Long died yesterday morning at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
And a Gretna man died Saturday when his car was swept into flood waters.
John Perkins' car was found near a bridge on business Route 29 North.
Hurricane Fran may be gone, but the destruction she left in her path is
still plaguing many people in our region.
About three thousand customers on the Danville Electric System are still
And officials say they are considering rebuilding power lines in the most
severely hit areas.
It may take several more days before all customers get power.
City officials are asking residents to report any storm damage.

The city of Buena Vista was saved from the horrible flooding they feared and
remembered all too well.
In the summer of '95 the city was hit by BACK to BACK floods.
High waters tore up roads and left many homeless.
This weekend several streets flooded, but officials say it wasn't even close
to what they experienced in recent floods.
And if high waters ever do come, officials say Buena Vista's flood wall will
provide some protection.

Flames engulfed this trailer in Montvale shortly before eight this morning.

escaped without any major injuries thanks to a couple of smoke detectors.
It took fire fighters 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control... but it
wasn't enough to save the trailer.
Investigator A- C Holland thinks the blaze might have been caused by faulty
wiring from a clock- radio.
A two story building in Elliston went up in smoke early this morning.
A Montgomery County deputy on patrol found the blaze around 2-45 this

Rapper Tupac Shakur remains in critical condition after undergoing
a second round of surgery in a Las Vegas hospital.
The troubled rap star was operated on last night to repair internal injuries
after taking several bullets in the chest late Saturday.
Shakur and his record producer were shot as they were driving along the
city's busy casino Strip.
Police don't know yet if Shakur was deliberately targeted, or if the
shooting was random.
It was the second time in two years the 25-year-old rap star has been shot.
Head Start is beginning another year of teaching children in their
all-important pre-school years.
Head Start provides care and a safe place for children three to five years
old while their parents get on their feet in the work force.

Roanoke's Jackson Middle School opened today after a week-long delay.
The newly renovated school did not open with the other city schools last
week because construction work had not been completed.
