The government filed a motion in TWO federal courts to force V-M-I to start complying with last June's Supreme Court ruling and start fielding applications from women.

***CONNIE AUDIO ON CART***
SUPER=03-Lexington/File Tape;

V-M-I's male-only admissions policy has remained un-changed since the Supreme Court ruled in June that the state- supported school can no longer exclude women.
Since then the Institute's Board of Visitors has been working on a plan to admit women, but hasn't invited any who've expressed an interest to apply.
"After more than six years of litigation," the government says, VMI continues "doing business as usual, fully serving the interests of men but refusing even to send applications to women...."
A spokesman at V-M-I points out that the Board of Visitors is set to meet next week and unveil it's plan for co-education. But the alumni are also still considering a plan to buy the place and make it a private school.
Superintendent Josiah Bunting called the government's motion "reprehensible and insulting."

(( STROM THURMOND/R-SC:A MARRIAGE IS THE LEGAL UNION OF A MAN AND A WOMAN..
So argued senators supporting the Defense of Marriage Act... the act allows states to refuse to recognize same sex marriages performed in other states... even though such unions aren't presently legal in any state.
But that may change as early as 1997. Courts in Hawaii are considering a state supreme court ruling declaring a ban on gay marriages unconstitutional...
And while hearings got underway in Honolulu... two women at the center of the debate were on Capitol Hill defending their rights to marry and receive the institution's associated legal and financial benefits. NINIA BAEHR/SEEKS SAME-SEX MARRIAGE:IF I AM HIT BY A TRUCK TOMORROW, THEY MAY NOT LET GENORA SEE ME OR DETERMINE MY MEDICAL CARE. THEY MAY CONSIDER MY PARENTS MY NEXT OF KIN AND NOT ALLOW HER IN THERE AT ALL."
To no one's surprise.. the republican majority assured the bill's passage... but while democrats question it's constitutionality...
President Clinton has said he will sign it.
But a bill... which would have barred job discrimination based on sexual orientation... and which was sponsored by democratic senator edward kennedy was surprisingly barely defeated. SEN. EDWARD KENNEDY/D-MA: TONIGHT WE HAVE A CHANCE TO MAKE A MEANINGFUL STEP. WE HAVE A CHANCE TO TURN OUR BACK ON BIGOTRY, INTOLERANCE, AND DISCRIMINATION.
