The U-S is moving more
warplanes into the Persian Gulf region.
The action follows an attempted strike today on American fighter jets.
The Pentagon says Iraqi missiles fired at a pair of American F-16 jets
patrolling over northern Iraq.
Both missiles missed and the planes returned safely.
The Pentagon already sent Saddan Hussein a warning about rebuilding Iraq's
air defense installations.

Powerful hurricane Hortense continues to crush the Caribbean this afternoon.
The storm is beginning to lash the Turks Islands with winds now reaching 100
miles per hour-- and they could keep growing today.
Hortense is moving northwest, and is centered 35 miles east of the Turks.
A hurricane warning extends into the southeastern Bahamas, with
a watch in the central Bahamas.

In the storm's wake, there is devastation.
Puerto Rico has eight
deaths, 650 homes destroyed and several million people with no
drinking water or electricity.
At least one-thousand people are homeless in the Dominican Republic.
Early morning showers in our area meant some problems for motorists, but
nothing compared to last week's flooding.
A number of small creeks jumped their banks, causing some roads to flood--
like Edgewood Street in Roanoke.
Meanwhile cars had to be moved out from the Willow River Apartment Complex
A storm drain backed up causing a parking lot to flood.
Southside residents may be able to breath a small sigh of relief, despite
the destruction left by Fran.
Steve Smallshaw reports they may be able to recoup some of their financial
loss by applying for federal disaster aid.

Residents needing immediate short- term assistance can come to Danville's
First Presbyterian Church.
That's where the Red Cross has set up shop to offer emergency food, clothing
and shelter for the city's flood victims.

Officials say you MUST register by phone to be eligible for federal aid.
The damage estimates from Fran statewide continue to mount.
State officials say floods destroyed 233 homes, caused major damage to more
than 15-hundred homes, and could cost at least 287-million dollars.
A multi-agency state task force went to work yesterday on the recovery.
Offices are setting up in Southside and the Shenandoah Valley.
They'll stay in operation for close to a year.

The latest stats show 560-thousand homes were without power statewide at
the height of the destruction.
That means at least one million people.
More than 900 roads were closed Friday night.
A former Martinsville teacher will be spending some time in jail.
A jury yesterday sentenced Anna Corbin to 30 days in jail for taking
indecent liberties with a student 18 years ago.
A 33-year veteran of the city school system, Corbin denied the charge, and
supporters described her as an exceptional teacher.
But a former student claimed Corbin abused her beginning in 1978, and she
recorded a telephone conversation last summer in which the defendant appeared
to admit her guilt.

Corbin will remain on bond until she's formally sentenced.
The 29 year old woman who brought the complaint declined to comment on
camera after the verdict, but says she was satisfied with the decision.
Though Corbin did not receive a lengthy jail term, the woman said she is
glad the defendant will not teach again.

set back their cause.

V-M-I has not made a desision on co-education yet, but it will not even send
applications to interested women.
The government says V-M-I is dragging its feet.
The Board has been meeting since mid-July, trying to fashion a plan to
accomodate women ...with "minimal" changes to the Institute.
Since the Supreme Court sided against V-M-I- -54 women have contacted V-M-I
expressing an interest in attending the school.
They've been told V-M-I is studying alternatives.
In the motion filed yesterday, the government says: "after more than six
years of litigation" V-M-I continues "doing business as usual, fully serving
the interests of men but refusing even to send applications to women."
He may not be running for Governor of Virginia again next term, but George
Allen is still moving up the political ladder.
He is the new chairman of the Southern Governors Association.
Allen has been attending the group's meeting in Kansas City this week.
He said his priorities will include holding conferences across the South on
revitalizing urban areas.

Is Virginia's only black-majority Congressional district unconstitutionally

That's what federal judges start looking into today.
A lawsuit filed by a national conservative group seeks to overturn the Third
District, held by Democrat Bobby Scott.
The district stretches from Norfolk to Richmond.

from presidential nominee Bob Dole.

In Texas, an Air Force Academy cadet and a Naval Academy midshipwoman are
in jail, accused of killing a sixteen year old woman.

The body of Adrianne Jones was found last December near Dallas.
She had been beaten with weights and shot.
Police believe she was killed by Air Force cadet David Graham and his
girlfriend, Naval midshipwoman Diane Zamora.
According to authorities, Zamora ordered Graham to kill Jones after Graham
admitted having sex with the girl.
Building on a halfway house on Melrose Avenue will not begin any time soon.
The Roanoke zoning board turned down a Washington D-C firm's building
The house is designed to ease former inmates back into society.
Despite the fact the Board of Zoning denied the application from Washington
Halfway Homes Incorporated... halfway house officials believe some inmates will
