Three people are dead after a two vehicle accident in Halifax County last
It happened on Route 58 at the intersection of Route 9-29.
Police say 16-year-old Robert Earl Crowe of Halifax was driving down route
As he turned on to Route 58 another vehicle broadsided his car.
Crowe died at the scene.
His passengers, 23-year-old Julia O'Steen Jones and one- year- old Miranda
Blair Jones, both of South Boston, also died at the scene.
The investigation into the fire that destroyed three businesses yesterday
more than likely will NOT start until mid-week.
Small flames still flicker throughout the charred remains of the FairLAWN
These hot spots are preventing the county fire investigating team from
looking over the debris.
Fairlawn fire chief Buddy Trigg says it may be Tuesday or Wednesday before
investigators can take a look.
Trigg also says a crane will be used to removed the collapsed roof so
investigators can determine where the blaze began.
The fire consumed three Fairlawn businesses.
The Carpet Shop, Schewel's Furniture and a tax service will NOT open
But Calvin Powers, owner of Powers Fence Company and The Carpet Shop says
the fence business will operate as usual.
And The Carpet Shop will use this vacant office located right next to their
burned out location.
Powers says he hopes to reopen The Carpet Shop by Wednesday.
He plans to rebuild.

L-F Payne is planning to run for lieutenant governor.
The 50-year-old Democrat from Nelson County has scheduled morning
announcements in Lovingston and Richmond.
Payne is retiring from the U-S Congress after serving there for the last

support for a possible run.
More than 90 of the state's 130 Democratic Party chairmen have endorsed
Payne for the nomination.
Also 18 of the 20 Democrats in the state Senate.
Mark Warner felt his run for the U-S Senate was loosing ground so he got a

The Democrat replaced Emily Smith on Friday with Anita Rimler.
The shakeup comes just 51 days before election time.
Mark Warner is about 20 points behind incumbent John Warner in the polls.

Governor George Allen and other state officials are facing an international
They are being sued by the Republic of Paraguay... because a Paraguayan
national is on death row.
The suit says the officials failed to follow treaty rules when foreign

North Carolina may have won the latest round in the fight over the Lake
A federal appeals court has asked for more information before making a
ruling on the pipeline.
The 76-mile pipeline is designed to pump up to 60 MILLION gallons of water a
day to Virginia Beach from Lake Gaston on the Virginia-North Carolina border.
North Carolina wants to have some say over the project but Virginia argues
that's not necessary because the pipeline takes water only north of the state

The U-S Department of Education will be investigating Virginia Tech.
There are allegations the school has NOT been truthful in reporting campus
The allegations have been made by Christy Brzonkala's lawyer.
Tech spokesman Larry Hincker calls the allegations "false and misleading."
Meanwhile, Brzonkala has appealed a judge's ruling that rape victims cannot
sue their attackers in federal court.
The former Tech Student contends two Virginia Tech football players raped
her in 19-94.
A U-S district judge ruled in July that Congress exceeded its constitutional
authority by passing the 19-94 Violence Against Women Act.
The appeal was filed Friday.

The total cost of the damage and destruction to businesses by Hurricane Fran
is no longer a murky picture.
Estimates now range in the hundreds of millions of dollars in Virginia.
A Lynchburg country radio station has been presented with one of the highest
honors it can receive from its peers.
WYYD-FM has won the Billboard Magazine "Station of the Year" award for 1996.
Vaughan Furniture of Galax posted a third quarter after tax profit of two-
point- three- million- dollars...up a million from where it was the same period

Third quarter sales rose by five million dollars.
Leggett Department Stores may soon have a new name, but not much else is

The tight-lipped chain based in Danville said in a terse statement that it

Ernie Irvan was the leader on lap 317 of the race and he was pulling away
from the field. But he runs up on Derrike Cope the rear end of his car gets
lose causing him to spin out and hit the wall bringing out the caution. Irvan
led 47 laps.
Mark Martin would lead the race for the second time with 267 to go and he
was the leader of the race at the half way point.
Dale Earnhardt moved the Goodwrench chevy to third place but he had tires
problems that ripped the sheet metal off the right rear of his car bringing out
Gordon came back to lead the race with 142 laps still to go to the finish.
Then Tempers flared near the end. Jimmy spencer and Wally Dallenbach get
together causing a crash involving several cars with 44 laps to go. Spencer
jumped out of car and has to be restrained as he want after Dallenbach who was
still in his car.
Gordon, who always runs well at Dover, made his move at the right time and
he wins the MBNA 500 at the Monster Mile.

In Miami, The Dolphins had to come from behind in order to beat the New York

Jet 1 yard line when Aaron Glen steps in front of this dan Marino pass in the

air and hits Webster Slaughter on this 30 yard touchdown strike and the Jets
led 14 to nothing.
Marino then got the Dolphins on track in the second. He goes to the air
and hooks up with Stanley Pritchett who lumbers into the end zone from 74 yards

Then just before the half, Favre hooks up with William Henderson on the 8

Desmond Howard scores his first points of the season. He takes this
