A special legislative commission says Virginia insurance companies should NOT
have to cover the cost of birth control pills.
Yesterday Planned Parenthood came out in favor of the legislation, but today
the commission declined to send it to a House of Delegates committee.
The bill would require all insurance companies, H-M-O's and corporations
that offer coverage for prescription drugs to also include prescription
Supporters say paying for contraceptives would reduce the number of unwanted
pregnancies and lower health care costs.
Opponents --including Trigon Blue Cross Blue Shield -- say it's an issue of

Child support collections by the state were up 14- percent this year, and
state officials say they're on a roll.
For more than a year, Virginia has been taking away driver's licenses and

Jeffrey Nichols owed more than 640 thousand dollars in child support.
Today a New York Supreme Court justice freed Nichols from his second jail
term on the condition he get a job and settle up with his former wife.
Police are on the lookout for a man who held up a bank in Galax this

The suspect handed the teller a note and demanded money.
He fled the scene in a four- door Dodge or Chrysler, with an undisclosed

No one was injured.

It took several years to lure Arkay Packaging into town, but Botetourt
County leaders will tell you it was worth the wait.
The company now has its new, 10- million- dollar plant up and running in the
East Park Commerce Center.
73 people there make cardboard packaging for cosmetic products and computer
Arkay came to Botetourt County because it's close to a number of its
customers, and its New York state headquarters.
In about three years it would like to double the size of its new plant, and
hire another 130 people.
One of Lynchburg's most popular historic attractions is experiencing a few
growing pains, but some federal grant money could help provide a cure.
For years, tour buses have had trouble navigating the hairpin turns and
narrow roadways that form the entrance to Point of Honor.

It's been more almost three years since Hooters of America sued a Roanoke
restaurant for copying its trademark.
Now the original restaurant, known for its waitresses in tight T-shirts and
short shorts, will be opening in the Star City.
Hooters is renovating the former Valley View Pancake House on Williamson
It's expected to open sometime in November.
A partner in the Hooters franchise says it will have a Florida theme with
fresh seafood and oldies music.
The staff claims it'll have the best chicken wings in the world and the
internationally-famed Hooters girls.
The new restaurant is expected to hire at least 70 people locally.
The controversy surrounding the Roanoke restaurant started in 1993.
That's when the now "Girls, Girls, Girls" business first opened calling
itself "Hooters of Virginia."
A federal judge ordered it to change its name.
They call it "Challenge by Choice," a new program at Carilion St. Albans
Center near Radford.
It's designed to bring groups together as it takes them to new heights.
This morning, students from Radford University were demonstrating the
skills they've learned on the new Ropes Course.
Carilion St. Albans Center will also cater to businesses and other
organizations that want to build teamwork and trust within their ranks.
