Half of all parents who owe child support in Virginia have chronic problems
For more than a year, the state has been taking away driver's licenses and
occupational licenses of deadbeat parents.
State officials say that is paying off.
Child support collections by the state were up 14- percent this year.

The Governor's Commission on Environmental Stewardship has come under
scrutiny in recent months.
Some think it was formed solely for political positioning.
But members of the committee say that's not the case.
They say they're tackling serious environmental issues.
This morning members conducted a meeting at the Salem Civic Center.
Topics included pollution prevention and enforcement of certain laws.
Later in the day, the group traveled to Rocky Mount, where they toured the
Ronile (ROH-nile) plant.
Ronile puts color on yarn and carpet... and it recently was recognized for
its dye recycling efforts.
Commission members hope trips like these will convince detractors that their
committee is for real.

A legislative commission appointed by Governor Allen says Virginia insurance
companies should NOT be required to cover the cost of birth control.
Yesterday, Planned Parenthood came out in favor of the proposal.
But today, the commission declined to recommend the legislation to a House
of Delegates committee.
The bill would require all insurance companies, health maintenance
organizations, and corporations that offer coverage for prescription drugs to
also include prescription contraceptives.
Supporters say paying for contraceptives would reduce the number of
abortions and lower health care costs.
Opponents --including Trigon Blue Cross Blue Shield -- say it's an issue of
Going, going, gone.

A million dollar capital campaign has helped erect two new outbuildings on
the property, including a kitchen where the museum will offer living history
programs and cooking demonstrations.
