A 60 year old Gretna man, John Perkins Senior, was killed in a flood- related accident.

Perkins was reported missing by his family on Friday after he failed to arrive for a doctor's appointment in Lynchburg.
The Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Department says he was killed this weekend when flood waters swept his vehicle into a culvert near the intersection of route 29 and 3-64.
Perkins' body was found late Saturday night in a swollen stream about a mile from his car.

No one was hurt. Paul Mitchum, his wife, and five kids, heard the smoke alarm and got out safely.

Chief Wells said it took about an hour to bring the blaze under control.
But he said the biggest problem was a heavy black smoke... which gained intensity from either paneling or foam rubber.
It was so strong that the deputy who discovered the blaze had to be treated at a nearby hospital for smoke inhalation.
No one was home at the time of the fire.
The investigation is being handled by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

The Covington businessman still has another eight years in prison ahead of him for drug running and money laundering.
A federal judge in Roanoke today sentenced Cucci to nine months in prison, concurrent with the original 14-year sentence. So Cucci will serve the additional time for tax evasion while he's finishing up the time he got in the cocaine conspiracy.
His wife, Janet, was fined 15-hundred dollars... to be paid at the rate of 100-dollars a month.

Chad Harris, who came into the race with the points lead, started on the pole and stayed up front for nearly 70 of the race's 100 laps.
But Johnny Rumley, who is second all-time in career wins at the track behind only Ronnie Thomas, went to the front in the familiar number 26 Chevrolet owned by Martinsville's Clarence Pickeral.
Rumley would win the race, but Harris's third place finish would be good enough to give the young Stuarts Draft native the track championship in just his third year at the track driving a car owned by Larry Dunn.
Harris finished the year with one win, while Six Pack Cundiff had 4, Roanoke's Tony McGuire won five times this season, and Jeff Agnew picked up 6 w's.
