Starting in August, the 157 year old all male tradition will come to an end.
The Board of Visitors narrowly approved the decision to keep the school public and allow female cadets.

State Police say the driver of a Lincoln Towncar was heading north when a truck pulled out in front of her.
She swerved to avoid the tractor trailer and crossed the median into the southbound lane.
The car then struck Young's vehicle on the driver's side.

Galax police say they have yet to find a motive for the murder of an elderly man.
Yesterday morning they found 79 year- old Willey Lee Goins stabbed to death in his home on Robinson Street.
State police and forestry officials have used tracking dogs to assist in the investigation.

A house fire that killed a Roanoke woman's mother and four children is prompting more legal action.

Patricia Leftwich filed five lawsuits yesterday totaling three-and-three-quarter million dollars against a real estate company.
Moore & Company did repair work at the Stewart Avenue home prior to the January blaze.
Leftwich says it used combustible materials which may have fueled the deadly fire.
Moore and Company's attorney said the company had nothing to do with the house at the time of the fire.
Leftwich settled a seperate lawsuit with her LANDLORD for 270- thousand dollars.

Investigators in the crash of T-W-A Flight 800 say the revelation that explosives were on the plane a month before the disaster does not change the course of THEIR work.

Recovery workers were still gathering up parts of the wreckage today, two months after the crash killed the 230 people on board.
Nine weeks passed before investigators were told about the explosives used in June to train bomb- sniffing dogs.

Last month a Washington D-C doctor who specializes in chronic pain treatment had his licence REVOKED by the Virginia Board of Medicine.
Now a former patient of William Hurwitz is suing to overturn the ruling.

The board ruled Hurwitz overprescribed narcotics and failed to sufficiently monitor his patients.
Laura Cooper, a Washington-based lawyer, filed a class-action lawsuit in U-S District Court in Richmond yesterday.
Hurwitz and Cooper say that one patient, a New York man, has killed himself because he could not stand the pain he was in.
Cooper, who has multiple sclerosis, said she is concerned that other former Hurwitz patients, unable to obtain pain relief, will be pushed to suicide.

A man who said he wanted to stop so-called "suicide-doctor" Jack Kevorkian has been arraigned on a concealed weapons charge.

But Larry Blakeman now says he showed up at Kevorkian's lawyer's office yesterday to seek the doctor's help for severe medical problems.
Neither Kevorkian nor his lawyer, Geoffrey Fieger was there at the time.

A magistrate denied his request to have Fieger assigned to represent him.

Now she's back in the hospital for observation following a fall.
She cut her head above her eyebrow, but a brain scan revealed no other injury.
Doctors in Calcutta say Mother Teresa is cheerful and doing well, but will remain hospitalized for several days.
Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity order in 19-50 to care for the poor and dying of Calcutta.

Another drug scandal is plaguing Columbian president Ernesto Samper.

Late last night drug sniffing dogs found nearly eight pounds of heroin on Samper's presidential jet.
Samper was preparing to fly to New York to give an anti- drug speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Monday.
Samper described the incident as "base" and said whoever planted the heroin is "dirtying the face of Columbia."
The State Department revoked Samper's U.S. tourist visa in July because of charges that his campaign received six million dollars from a well- known Columbian drug cartel.
Samper was cleared of those charges.
