KNIGHT KIPLINGER/"KIPLINGER WASHINGTON LETTER": THE FEDS ARE NOT LOOKING IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR THEY ARE LOOKING IN THEIR TELESCOPE AT WHAT LIES AHEAD AND THEY ARE SEEING A SLOWING OF THE ECONOMY AND NO NEED TO RAISE INTEREST RATES RIGHT NOW.
Kiplinger says in particular the fed sees evidence of slowing in consumer spending. Retailers are feeling the results of American's huge debt burden and the growing number of personal bankruptcies.
While experts say presidential politics played little to no role in the board's decision. REGINA BLAKELY/WASHINGTON: BUT ONE THING THAT PROBABLY DID PLAY A ROLE IN THE OUTCOME WAS LAST WEEK'S LEAK THAT 8 OUT OF THE 12 FED REGIONAL BANKS WERE LOBBYING FOR A RATE INCREASE, SOMETHING ALAN GREENSPAN MOST LIKELY DID NOT WELCOME.
KIPLINGER: I THINK HE WANTED TO SHOW THE LEAKERS THAT THEY COULDN'T PUSH HIM TOWARDS A DECISION THAT WASN'T RIGHT JUST BECAUSE THEY WENT PUBLIC WITH IT.
So, interest rates which affect consumers on everything from home equity loans to car loans will stay steady for now. The board meets again november 13th. Regina Blakely, CBS News, Washington.))
