It's a scam that can cost businesses thousands of dollars--- Telephone Fraud.


One of the latest, and least likely targets has been the Roanoke County Police Department.
Scott Prince explains what this scam is all about.

(( Dispatchers at the Roanoke County Police Communications Center answer hundreds of calls a day... and of course their main goal is to help people in need.
But it seems they've been taken advantage of by a group called social engineers-- scam artists-- who call, claiming to be with the phone company.
They ask to be transferred to an outside telephone line, and ultimately rack up astronomical long distance bills.

Officials estimate that a total of 15- hundred dollars worth of illegitimate phone calls have been made on Roanoke County's tab.
But they say the problem can be found everywhere... and that practically any office can fall victim.

A group called the Concerned Citizens Coalition presented Rockbridge County leaders with their assessment of the most recent study done over the past two decades.
The residents blasted the report, which says an airport is an affordable and profitable option for the county...they claim a lot of information in the report is incomplete and inaccurate.
But county supervisor Bob Berkstresser, who's on the record in favor of the project, says the first phase of the construction would pump more than 50- million- dollars into the local economy.
And even if that number is off by a little, it's hard to argue with when you consider that the three localities would only have have to contribute less than a half- million- dollars.

Residents believe the spring became a muddy mess when a sinkhole drained a runoff retention pond at a development nearby.

Family and friends rembered Magna Vista's first and only boys high school basketball coach yesterday for his spirit and generosity.

Young was killed in a car crash on Route 2-20 over the weekend.
Friends say he was on his way to deliver food to the elderly.
Young taught physical education and health at Magna Vista.

Members of the award winning team were among the hundreds who attended his funeral.
