((
This is not how Prime Minister Netanyahu had planned to spend his
hundredth day in office... hurrying home from a European tour to
face widespread fighting between Israeli and Palestinian forces.
The deadly violence spread around the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
Young Arabs armed with the traditional weapons of protest,
were backed up by their elders with weapons of war. There were
gunfights between Palestinian policemen and Israeli soldiers at outposts,
checkpoints and around Jewish settlements.
There were casualties among the Palestinians... among the Israeli
soldiers.... and among the journalists, CBS News cameraman Issa Freij was
injured by a bullet that narrowly missed his heart.
DR. NABIL SHA'ATH, PALESTINIAN CABINET MINISTER: THIS IS A TRAGIC EXPLOSION OF
POPULAR ANGER AND A TOTAL DISREGARD OF HUMAN LIFE BY ISRAELI TROOPS.
And with the toll of dead on both sides rising, the first funerals, the
first outpourings of grief... there will be many more.
PLO chief Yassir Arafat has ordered his men not to fire unless their lives
are in danger... it's not clear they're listening.
ISRAELI DEFENSE MINISTER YITZHAK MORDECHAI: SOME ARE WORKING WITH US, SOME ARE
SHOOTING, SOME ARE NOT UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE PALESTINIAN AUTHORITIES.
As bad as it is, the fighting has so far been limited to small arms. That
may shortly change. Israel has been bringing up the big guns, moving tanks near
the fighting but not unleashing their might, yet.
standup
Netanyahu seems to be hoping a show of force will convince the Palestinians to
end the fighting on Israel's terms. But Arafat has terms of his own... US
pressure could probably end the killing... it's getting hard to see what else
can.
