((Palestinians were out on the streets of the West Bank and Gaza again, fanning the flames of their new intifada. They tried to march on Israeli checkpoints, but this time...they were stopped. Under orders from Yasser Arafat, paramilitary Palestinian police kept demonstrators a safe distance away from Israeli troops.

(EARLIER THIS WEEK)

It was a clear shift in policy from the past few days, when demonstrators stormed Israeli positions unhindered, and sparked major gunbattles between Israeli and Palestinian forces.
But Arafat seemed determined to calm the situation, after Israel accused him of losing control over some of his 30,000 armed men.
Despite the relative calm, the atmosphere remains tense. Israeli troops, backed by tanks and armor, are on high alert, and prepared for a massive response if attacked.
Both sides continued to bury their dead, and EACH continues to blame the other for the violence.
