(( Israel reopened the controversial tunnel in Jerusalem's old city, which had been closed over the sabbath.
The opening of the tunnel last week sparked the worst Israeli-Palestinian gunbattles since the 1967 Middle East war.
But this time there was little opposition on the streets. Arafat's paramilitary police force restored order, and the West Bank and Gaza Strip were calm.
The few demonstrations that did take place were peaceful.
Even a funeral for one of the Palestinian victims of the violence passed quietly, in contrast to the rage at funerals a few days ago.
Israel also buried its dead.
As the tension declined, Israeli troops at border checkpoints finally found the time to observe Succot, the week-long Biblical feast of tabernacles.
On the Palestinian side, soldiers took a breather, too.
What further calmed tensions, was President Clinton's announcement of a Netanyahu-Arafat summit in Washington this week aimed at ending the violence.
