A high speed chase involving a stolen car ended with one death tonight.
It all started in Alleghany County when police clocked a speeder in excess
of 87 miles per hour in a car reportedly stolen from Kentucky.
The pursuit lasted approximately six minutes with the suspect, 19-year old
Timothy Stocks, striking at least one truck and a bridge in Alleghany County.
The state police decided to call off the chase as the car approached a
dangerous intersection on Route 220 South near Gala in Botetourt County.
Stocks reportedly continued to flee when he slammed into two other cars
including a gray Volkswagen head one.
The driver of the Volkswagen was killed.
One person in the other car was injured and transported to Roanoke Memorial
Hospital with injuries described as not life threatening.
Stocks and a passenger in his car were also taken to Memorial where their
conditions have not been released.
The name of the deceased has not been released.
Charges are pending against Stocks.
One man died in a fire in his mobile home in the Price's Fork Area of
Montgomery county today.
Blacksburg firefighters arrived at the trailer at 3252 Mount Zion Road around
4:30 this afternoon.
Officials say they found the body of 52 year old Ronald L.Cromer in a back
room of the building.
He apparently died of smoke inhalation.
The cause of the blaze has not been determined.
Galax police won't discuss a motive... but they have made two arrests in the
city's latest murder.
A week and a half ago, 79- year- old Willie Goins was found dead in his

The main suspects in the case were 37- year- old Charles Howard, and 21-
year- old (TEE-sha) Tisha Howard-- a married couple who lived nearby.
The two apparently skipped town, but were found Friday in Tacoma Park,

The Middle East peace process is "in a state of crisis," according to U-S
Secretary of State Warren Christopher on the eve of a summit between Israel and

tomorrow before all parties sit down together.

Forty-thousand pairs of shoes line the reflecting pool outside the U-S
They represent the number of Americans killed each year by gun violence.
Members of the non-profit group "Silent March Against Gun Violence" say the
shoes belonged to gunshot victims, their families, and citizens fed up with gun
The group supports regulation of the manufacture and sale of guns.
One woman- -whose son was shot to death- -warned politicians, "if you don't
make some changes, we're going to flush the political toilet."
Nearly 15 weeks after the Valujet crash in the Florida Everglades...
Valujet was airborne again today, for the first time.
The plane, carrying airline president Lewis Jordan among its 115 passengers-
-took off from Atlanta, board for Dulles International Airport this afternoon.
The flight was about half an hour late, taking off.
The plane carried a few people who just wanted to be among ValuJet's loyal
passengers- -as well as several politicians, news reporters and photographers.
Each year, con artists cheat countless people out of thousands of dollars.

More than sixty workers at Lynchburg's Griffin Pipe plant were given "no"
warning before being laid off from their jobs last Friday.
Griffin Pipe officials say it was a corporate decision to let the workers go
with no advance warning.
The affected employees were part of Griffin's soil pipe division, which the
company has shut down due to a declining market share.
Soil pipe is commonly used in household plumbing.
Griffin continues to be a major player in the pressure pipe market, making
iron pipe for use in large sewer systems.
The laid- off employees represent less than twenty percent of the Lynchburg
Some of them will be given special consideration to be rehired when jobs
open up in other parts of the plant.
President Clinton is expected to send 20 million dollars in sewer repair
money to Lynchburg.
The money, part of the Water Resources Development Act, will help the city
pay for its combined sewer overflow project.
That 20- year, 200- million dollar program is revamping Lynchburg's sewer
system to comply with E-P-A regulations.
City officials said today any help the federal government can provide will
be gladly accepted.

Housing Alliance told her she'll have to move out of the Alleghany Building
while it's being renovated... but the Alliance promised to make up the
difference in her rent, and pay the deposit on her utilities. She says she

Some of the top senior golfers in the world were resting up in Hot Springs
last night getting set for today's big Merrill Lynch Shootout at the Cascades.

Today, the living history museum announced a gift of 500- thousand dollars
from members of the Taubman family.
The donation will cover the entire cost of constructing the seven thousand
square foot building.
It will be named in memory of Arthur Taubman, the Roanoke civic leader and
businessman who built Advance Auto into a national chain.
