The Rockbridge County sheriff today confiscated his equipment, a day after
the stuntman was arrested on a charge of being drunk in public.
Knievel was supposed to leap over two dozen cars at the Salem Civic Center
But he said that his sponsors canceled his performance after his arrest.

They got a court order to have the Rockbridge sheriff seize Knievel's two
motorcycles, ramps and other gear.
In court papers, George and Sally Davis of ANT-I-QUE, Incorporated, say they
they didn't know the show was canceled until they saw Knievel on TV.
They gave him a 15-thousand dollar deposit, and 10-thousand dollars for

away from coming on line.

A Rockbridge County man has been sentenced to 69 years in prison, for
shooting two people Christmas Eve.
Ronald Hewitt pled guilty in July to the murder of 24-year-old Christopher
Higgins, his ex-girlfriend's boyfriend.
Hewitt also pled guilty to aggravated malicious wounding, for shooting
Armed with a rifle, Hewitt forced his way into the couple's home, walked
into their bedroom and shot them.
He could have gotten life in prison.

A group of honors students in Danville have gained a new perspective on
A doctor at Danville Regional Medical Center brought samples of lungs
damaged by smoking for the students to view.
The teens, who're enrolled in the Governor's School at Danville Community
College, will use the information for a class project.
They're studying all aspects of tobacco-- including the positive impact the
golden leaf has on the local economy.
Tobacco is the Southside's number one cash crop.

Postal Workers across the country are celebrating the 100th anniversary of
Rural Free Delivery, a service which still has plenty of importance today.
This is just one of 57- thousand remote postal routes in the U- S... and the
century old program continues to serve more than 25- million customers, six
days a week.

It took these letter carriers an hour and half to ride about 2 miles.

A change at the top for the Heironimus department store chain.
Larry Drombetta, (drom-BET-uh) the president of Heironimus, is leaving to
run the U-S operations of a German retailer.
Drombetta says his decision is a personal one.
He adds he's confident the management at Heironimus continues to have a
genuine interest in its customers and its success in the area.
Heironimus has five stores in Roanoke, and one in Lynchburg.
Drombetta's successor is Bane Sandridge (sand-RIDGE).
For the past three years he's been the chain's merchandising manager.
He previously worked for Leggett.

A year from now the valley's first greenway will be taking shape in Roanoke
Today, residents of the area received their first look at plans for the
Hanging Rock Battlefield Trail.
The first phase of the project will follow an old rail bed along Kessler
More than 500- thousand dollars in federal funds have already been earmarked
for the trail.
The area was the site of the Roanoke Valley's most important civil war
battle, and designers have tried to incorporate that history into their plan.
