case.

SUPER=03-Salem;
76 year old Frank (HELL-veh-steen) Helvestine was brought in on a wheelchair
yesterday to face four felonies at the Roanoke County Courthouse.
The charges include murder, malicious wounding and arson, stemming from a
crime committed 21 years ago.
Helvestine is accused of planting a car bomb in 19-75.
It killed a toddler-- 23- month- old Carrie Mask-- who was walking with her
parents when the bomb went off.
Prosecutors said given the time lapse, proving guilt in this case may be
more challenging.

This medical thriller is a breakthrough for Hugh Grant, who is still
engagingly clean cut, but believable as harried hospital resident Dr. Luthen,
who loses a patient to a mysterious illness and discovers that a powerful
doctor is using homeless men as experimental subjects.
Luthen finds his career and even his life in danger as a result of his
curiosity.
Gene Hackman is the scientist who plays God. Sarah Jessica Parker is a
nurse who gets involved.

There is some effort to make this a philosophical element--is it acceptable
to kill a few men if doing so might save thousands?
Ultimately, this is just a better than average "B+" suspense film. But it
does show Hugh Grant isn't just a very pretty face.
